A free password manager is worth using even if you pay for nothing else, because reused passwords cause more account takeovers than almost any other habit. The free plans differ in what they hold back. Bitwarden's free plan covers basic password management with free sharing with one other user. Proton Pass is free with unlimited logins and devices, two vaults and ten hide-my-email aliases. LastPass Free is limited to one device type, desktop or mobile, which forces an upgrade for most people. RoboForm Free keeps unlimited passwords on a single device, and Keeper's free option is a family plan for up to five members. KeePassXC and KeePass are free open-source programs that keep an encrypted file on your own disk, with no company holding your vault, but you handle syncing and backups. The trade-off is convenience against control. Hosted managers sync across phone and laptop by themselves, whereas file-based managers give you the vault and the responsibility. Before moving, export your passwords, turn on two-factor authentication for the manager itself, write down the recovery information, and delete the plain-text export once the import works.
