Good fit if

  • You want to encrypt a USB drive or a whole partition (VeraCrypt is the pick)
  • You keep sensitive files in Dropbox or Google Drive (Cryptomator is the pick)
  • You need to send one file to a colleague (age is the pick)
  • You must sign and encrypt messages with OpenPGP (GnuPG is the pick)
  • You set up a Linux laptop and want the disk encrypted (cryptsetup (LUKS) is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

Encryption tools solve different problems, and picking by name alone leads to using the wrong one. Full-volume tools such as VeraCrypt create an encrypted container or encrypt a whole partition or USB drive, and it can encrypt the Windows system partition. Cloud-oriented tools such as Cryptomator and gocryptfs encrypt files before they reach Dropbox or Google Drive, so the provider only ever sees scrambled files. Picocrypt encrypts single files with a simple window. GnuPG and age are command-line tools for files and messages; GnuPG is the long-established OpenPGP implementation and age is a small modern alternative with short keys. cryptsetup brings LUKS disk encryption on Linux. The decision depends on what you protect and from whom. A lost laptop calls for full-disk encryption, a shared cloud folder calls for Cryptomator, and sending a file to someone calls for age or GnuPG. The trade-off is that strong encryption has no recovery path: forget the password or lose the key and the data is gone, so keep a written copy in a safe place. Also check maintenance, since the Picocrypt repository is archived, and note Cryptomator's mobile apps are read-only until you pay.

GnuPG

GNU GPL implementation of OpenPGP with command-line encryption and signing, also S/MIME and ssh. Powerful and widely supported, but the learning curve is steep.

Price: Free (Free open source) (cryptsetup (LUKS) pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Linux. GPL-2.0-or-later (open source).

Best for: Full-disk encryption on Linux.
