Verdict:Leave Bitwarden when you want a paid vendor with a single account and a bundled suite, not an open-source vault you can host. Bitwarden's free plan covers basic password management and sharing with one other user, and its Premium plan is listed at $19.80 a year, or $1.65 a month billed annually. Families is $47.88 a year for up to six people. If you do not need sync, KeePassXC is the free exit: it is GPLv3 and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, but the vault stays in a file you copy yourself. Keeper's free family plan covers five people and unlimited devices, which suits a household better than Bitwarden's one shared user; check its pricing page for business tiers. Proton Pass gives a free plan with two vaults and sharing with two people, which fits someone already paying for Proton Mail, ; check its pricing page for paid plans. 1Password has no free plan on its pricing page, so check its pricing page for individual prices. Dashlane offers a 14-day trial and no free tier. The trade-off is cost against control. Bitwarden is the cheapest hosted choice with a free tier; the paid suites add polish you pay for each month. Stay if you want free sync. Move only when a feature you need is missing, and check the feature on the vendor page first.

Why people look for Bitwarden alternatives

Bitwarden's free plan covers unlimited devices and passwords, but the built-in authenticator (TOTP), encrypted file attachments, emergency access, vault health reports and support for up to 10 hardware security keys are paid features. Premium costs $19.80 per year and Families $47.88 per year for up to six users, so the price is low, but anyone who needs those features cannot stay on the free tier. Free sharing is limited to one other user. Separately, Bitwarden said on October 9, 2026 that the apps published to app stores and the downloads on its website will become commercially licensed builds from the next release. The GPLv3 source stays public on GitHub, and Bitwarden says self-hosting is unchanged.
