About Free Instead Of

What Free Instead Of covers, how we handle sponsorship, and our editorial independence commitments.

What is Free Instead Of?

Free Instead Of is an independent directory of English free and open-source alternatives to traditional paid design, photo, video, and PDF software. We publish hands-on notes where we tested a tool, migration tips for leaving subscription suites, and pricing taken from official vendor sites — so you can choose on evidence, not marketing copy.

Coverage starts with common swaps (for example Canva, Lightroom, and After Effects alternatives) and grows across Design, Photo, Video, PDF, and CAD verticals as articles are reviewed and seeded.

About the Author

Author attribution is pending confirmation. Until then, treat bylines as provisional. Feedback and corrections welcome: hello@freeinsteadof.com. See the Editorial Independence Policy below for how sponsorship is handled and what it can and cannot influence.

What Featured / Sponsored status CAN do

  • Top placement on category list pages (labeled "Sponsored" — never soft euphemisms)
  • Extended listing template space (logo and brand color customization)
  • Home-page spotlight slot when ads are enabled (labeled "Sponsored Spotlight")
  • Inclusion in recommendation candidate pools (not guaranteed placement)

What Featured / Sponsored status CANNOT do

  • Influence the default sort order of organic directory listings
  • Influence any data or conclusion on comparison or alternatives pages
  • Hide negative facts (missing platforms, paid upsells, export limits, etc.)
  • Modify editorial Pros/Cons or tested/not-tested labels
  • Request takedown of competitor comparison pages

Dispute handling

  • Featured customers get one free modification per month — limited to objective errors (wrong price, stale logo, broken link)
  • Dissatisfaction with editorial evaluation does not qualify for a refund
  • These terms are copied into every Featured contract with mandatory opt-in at purchase

Transparency commitments

  • Every Featured placement carries a mandatory "Sponsored" badge (no variants permitted)
  • Annual Sponsorship Disclosure Report when paid relationships exist — see Disclosure Archive
  • "We never change rankings, comparisons, or negative facts based on payment."
