Good fit if

  • You want codes that never leave your phone (Aegis Authenticator is the pick)
  • You lose phones often and want painless restore (2FAS Auth is the pick)
  • You need codes on a laptop as well as a phone (Ente Auth is the pick)
  • You use Windows, Linux and Android together (Proton Authenticator is the pick)
  • You already pay for Bitwarden's password manager (Bitwarden Authenticator is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

A free 2FA app generates the six-digit codes you type after your password, and nearly every option does that part identically. What differs is what happens when your phone is lost, and that is the one question to settle before you move any accounts. Aegis stores codes only on your Android device and gives you an encrypted export to keep safe, with no account and no cloud. 2FAS and Ente Auth offer optional encrypted backup, so a new phone restores in minutes, and Ente Auth also runs on desktop and web. Proton Authenticator is free across every major platform and keeps codes available offline. Bitwarden Authenticator and Authy sit at the convenient end: Authy syncs across devices, but its desktop apps reached end of life in March 2024. The trade-off is simple. Local-only apps are harder to attack remotely but easier to lose, while synced apps rescue you from a dead phone and put an encrypted copy of your seeds on someone's server. Whichever you choose, move accounts one at a time, keep the recovery codes each site gave you, and test that a code works before you delete the old entry.

Aegis Authenticator
