Good fit if

  • You want one vault synced across phone and laptop for free (Bitwarden is the pick)
  • You will not store passwords with any cloud service (KeePassXC is the pick)
  • You also want hidden email addresses for signups (Proton Pass is the pick)
  • You only use one computer (RoboForm is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

A password generator is only half the job: the other half is where the generated password goes afterward. A web page that creates a random string and then forgets it is fine for a one-off, but if you generate a unique password for every account, as you should, you need a place to store them, and that is why the best free generators are built into password managers. Bitwarden, Proton Pass, LastPass and RoboForm generate passwords in the login form and save them straight into your vault. KeePassXC and KeePass do the same entirely offline, with the vault stored as a file you control, which suits people who do not want an account with a cloud service. The trade-off is sync: the hosted managers follow you across phone and laptop automatically, while the file-based ones need you to set up Dropbox, a network share or similar. Free tiers can also restrict you to one device type, so check that before you move your passwords. Whatever you choose, pick a long password of at least sixteen characters, avoid reusing it, and keep your master password somewhere safe. The six tools below all have a free tier or free licence and include a generator.
