Good fit if

  • You design with developers and need comments and handoff (Figma is the pick)
  • You want open source or a self-hosted design server (Penpot is the pick)
  • You work offline on a desktop (Lunacy is the pick)
  • The design will become a published website (Framer is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

Free UI design tools split into two camps: browser-first collaborative editors and desktop apps that work offline. Figma and Penpot sit in the first camp, and both give you shared files, components and prototyping on a free plan, but Figma limits how much you get while Penpot caps editors at eight on its free professional plan and is open source, so you can host it yourself. Lunacy is the desktop option and works on Windows, macOS and Linux with no account required for local files, though its built-in icon and photo library asks for a link back or a subscription. Framer is better when the design is going to ship as a website, because the canvas publishes straight to a live page. Quant-UX and Pencil Project are lighter tools for clickable prototypes and wireframes. To choose, ask who needs to open the file. If developers and stakeholders must comment, pick a browser tool with a free viewer tier. If you work alone on a laptop with patchy internet, pick the desktop route. The trade-off to accept is lock-in: Figma files do not round-trip cleanly into other editors, so if you may move later, favour the tool whose file format you can export and keep. Each pick below lists the free limit that applies, so you can see what you give up before you start a real project in it.
