Editorial illustration: CorelDRAW Alternatives 2026: 5 Free Options

Verdict:CorelDRAW is vector and layout software for Windows, Mac and Web, offered with a free trial and no price on its home page. Prices elsewhere disagreed, so check Corel directly. People leave because of subscription cost or because they want open formats. Inkscape is the usual answer: GPL-3.0, free on Linux, macOS and Windows, with SVG as the working format. You give up CorelDRAW's print and page-layout tools, color management and file compatibility with its older formats, which matters if clients send you CDR files. Penpot is a browser alternative with a $0 Professional plan for up to eight members, but it is aimed at interface design more than print. Figma has the same web-first approach, with a $0 Starter plan and Professional at $16 per full seat. Affinity Photo is free for individuals on Mac and Windows per affinity.studio, which makes it a no-cost option for raster work. GIMP is useful only as the photo half; it is raster, so it replaces Corel PHOTO-PAINT, not CorelDRAW itself. The trade-off is workflow. CorelDRAW users often rely on its integrated tools for signs, packaging and layout. Switch if your work is logos and illustration. Stay if you need CDR compatibility or print workflows.

Why people look for CorelDRAW alternatives

CorelDRAW is sold three ways: an annual subscription, a monthly subscription, or a one-time purchase. The one-time purchase leaves out many subscriber features and apps and gets no ongoing support for future operating systems; its 2,000 AI credits do not renew, while subscribers get 2,000 each month. Browser-based client review tools and CorelDRAW Web need a subscription or maintenance plan. Cancelling maintenance leaves you on the last version you received.

Inkscape

Compared with CorelDRAW: GPL-3.0 and free on Linux, macOS and Windows. The standard open-source vector editor, with SVG as its native format; it has less page-layout and print workflow than CorelDRAW.

Price: Free (Free software under GPLv3; the site asks for donations and lists no paid tier) (Inkscape pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Linux, macOS, Windows. GPL-3.0 (open source).

Project activity: 4.1k GitHub stars · No commits since Mar 3, 2022

Best for: Free vector illustration.

Worth knowing: SVG vector editor. The site links to the GPLv3 guide; the GPLv3 license name is taken from that link.

Penpot

Compared with CorelDRAW: Browser-based, with an open-source design tool whose Professional plan is $0 for up to 8 team members. Built for interface design rather than print, so CorelDRAW's print tools are missing.

Price: Free (Professional plan at $0: up to 8 team members plus unlimited viewers, 10GB storage, 7 days of version history); paid from $7 per per editor/month (Unlimited), capped at $175/month; 14-day free trial (Penpot pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Web. MPL-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 61.8k GitHub stars · latest release 2.18.5 (Oct 26, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Collaborative vector and UI design.

Figma

Compared with CorelDRAW: Starter plan at $0 with limited access and unlimited drafts; Professional is $16 per full seat. Stronger for team design, but not a print-production tool like CorelDRAW.

Price: Free (Starter at $0: limited access to Figma products, unlimited drafts, 150 AI credits a day (500 a month)); paid from $16 per per full seat/month (Professional); annual rate not shown in the extracted text (Figma pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Web, macOS, Windows. Proprietary.

Best for: Team design in the browser.

Affinity Photo

Compared with CorelDRAW: Free for individuals on Mac and Windows per affinity.studio. Vector and raster in one app family, with optional AI tools behind a Canva premium plan.

Price: Free (Free for individuals per affinity.studio; an iPad version is listed as coming soon; optional AI tools need a Canva premium plan) (Affinity Photo pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS. Proprietary.

Best for: Free for individuals.

Worth knowing: affinity.studio states Affinity is free for individuals, Mac and Windows downloads, with a Canva premium plan only needed for optional AI tools.

GIMP

Compared with CorelDRAW: Free GIMP is a raster editor, so it covers photo work like Corel PHOTO-PAINT, not vector drawing. Pair it with Inkscape to replace the main CorelDRAW pieces.

Price: Free (Free; source tarballs offered, donation link only, no paid tier. Store packages are third-party and not from the GIMP team) (GIMP pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Linux, macOS, Windows. Open source (license not named on gimp.org/downloads) (open source).

Best for: Photo editing companion.

Worth knowing: Raster image editor for photo retouching and compositing.

Adobe Illustrator

Compared with CorelDRAW: Illustrator's plans page lists a single-app plan billed annually, a 7-day free trial and no free plan. CorelDRAW also has a free trial but additionally sells a one-time purchase.

Price: See pricing page (Adobe Illustrator pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Canva

Compared with CorelDRAW: Offers a free plan, where CorelDRAW has only a free trial. Paid pricing is on Canva's pricing page rather than stated here.

Price: Free (Free plan available; see the pricing page for its current limits) (Canva pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
