Verdict:Leave Illustrator if you only draw logos, icons and simple illustrations and resent paying a monthly Creative Cloud fee for them. Adobe's plans page offers a seven-day trial and no free plan, and the single-app price we could read was shown in Korean won, so check your own region before deciding. Inkscape is the straight swap for most people: it is free, runs on all three desktop systems and exports clean SVG, though it feels less polished than Illustrator and print handoff takes more care. Penpot and Figma suit interface and web work, where shared files and browser access matter more than brush tools. Canva is the fastest route for non-designers who want finished graphics from templates, at the cost of precise path control. Affinity is worth testing if you want to leave subscriptions, since affinity.studio says it is free for individuals, but its Photo app leans raster. The trade-off is plain: Illustrator still has the deepest toolset and the best file compatibility with print vendors and agencies. If a client sends you AI files daily, keep it. If not, start with Inkscape, and add Penpot or Figma only when collaboration is the real need.

Adobe Illustrator today: See pricing page (Adobe Illustrator pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Illustrator is sold as a subscription at US$22.99 per month on an annual plan billed monthly; the plans page shows no separate month-to-month price and mentions no perpetual license. The free trial lasts 7 days for individuals. The all-apps Creative Cloud Pro plan is listed at US$69.99 per month regularly, so anyone who only needs vector work pays a recurring fee with no way to own the software.
Compared with Adobe Illustrator: Free GPL-3.0 vector editor on Windows, macOS and Linux, with no paid tier. It lacks Illustrator's Creative Cloud libraries and some polish in print workflows, but covers paths, shapes, text and SVG export without a subscription.
Price: Free (Free software under GPLv3; the site asks for donations and lists no paid tier) (Inkscape pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Linux, macOS, Windows. GPL-3.0 (open source).
Project activity: 4.1k GitHub stars · No commits since Mar 3, 2022
Best for: Free desktop vector drawing and SVG work.
Worth knowing: SVG vector editor. The site links to the GPLv3 guide; the GPLv3 license name is taken from that link.
Compared with Adobe Illustrator: Free open-source design tool in the browser or self-hosted, with up to 8 team members on the free plan. Better for UI and layout vectors than for Illustrator-style illustration or heavy print artwork.
Price: Free (Professional plan at $0: up to 8 team members plus unlimited viewers, 10GB storage, 7 days of version history); paid from $7 per per editor/month (Unlimited), capped at $175/month; 14-day free trial (Penpot pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
Platforms and license: Web. MPL-2.0 (open source).
Project activity: 61.8k GitHub stars · latest release 2.18.5 (Oct 26, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Interface and web vector design with a team.
Compared with Adobe Illustrator: Starter plan is free with unlimited drafts, and vector editing runs in the browser. You give up Illustrator's depth for print and brushes, and gain real-time collaboration and easy sharing.
Price: Free (Starter at $0: limited access to Figma products, unlimited drafts, 150 AI credits a day (500 a month)); paid from $16 per per full seat/month (Professional); annual rate not shown in the extracted text (Figma pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
Platforms and license: Web, macOS, Windows. Proprietary.

Compared with Adobe Illustrator: Has a free plan, so simple logos, social graphics and flyers cost nothing. It is template-driven and not a precision vector editor like Illustrator, so complex custom paths take more effort.
Price: Free (Free plan available; see the pricing page for its current limits) (Canva pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Web, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android. Proprietary.
Best for: Quick graphics from templates.
Compared with Adobe Illustrator: Free for individuals on Mac and Windows per affinity.studio, so it removes the Adobe subscription. The Photo app is raster-first, so confirm its vector tools fit your work.

Worth knowing: affinity.studio states Affinity is free for individuals, Mac and Windows downloads, with a Canva premium plan only needed for optional AI tools.
