Good fit if

  • You draw a logo that must scale (Inkscape is the pick)
  • You tweak a small icon quickly (SVG-Edit is the pick)
  • You draw icons within an app design (Penpot is the pick)
  • You make diagrams to export as SVG (draw.io (diagrams.net) is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

An SVG editor draws scalable vector shapes, and the free ones fall into three kinds. Full desktop programs such as Inkscape, which is GPLv3 and the closest thing to a free Illustrator, handle complex artwork, text on paths and precise export. Browser editors such as SVG-Edit, an MIT-licensed open-source project, are lightweight and good for fixing or making simple icons without installing anything. Design tools such as Penpot, Figma and Lunacy draw vectors as part of interface design and export clean SVG, so they suit icons and illustrations for apps. draw.io produces diagrams and exports SVG, which suits charts and flows. Decide by what the SVG is for. For a logo or illustration, use Inkscape or Penpot. For a quick icon tweak, SVG-Edit loads in a tab. For diagrams, draw.io. Whatever you choose, check the output: some tools produce bulky markup or embed fonts, so run the file through an optimizer before shipping it on a website. Also keep text as outlines if the font may not be installed where the SVG is displayed. The trade-off is power against speed: Inkscape does everything and takes time to learn, while browser editors do less and start immediately. Seven options follow, each with its license or free limit.
