Short answer: Canva is for marketing templates—social posts, decks, Brand Kit speed. Figma is for UI design systems—components, Auto Layout, Dev Mode handoff. They overlap on “draw rectangles,” not on the job that matters. We did not install Canva or Figma; related free evidence is Inkscape exports on our Canva and Figma alternatives pages.

How we ordered the tools: this is a role comparison, not a ranking. We have no product of our own here and did not install either app; the verdict follows each vendor’s official pages.

Price

  • Figma: pricing lists Starter Free and Professional Full seat $16/mo (annual toggle shown when we fetched). Dev/Collab seats and Org/Enterprise rates are on the same page.
  • Canva: see canva.com/pricing—our fetcher hit an unsupported-client page, so we do not invent Pro dollars here.
  • Free offline path we ran: Inkscape (free Canva alternative).

Platforms

Both are browser-first with desktop/mobile companions per their sites. Figma’s native desktop story is Windows/macOS; Linux users often stay in browser or switch to Inkscape/Penpot. Our only related test was Inkscape on Linux.

Learning curve

Canva optimises for non-designers: pick a template, swap text. Figma optimises for product designers: components, variants, variables, prototyping. Switching either way without changing the job description feels like the wrong tool, not a “worse Canva.”

Formats and handoff

Canva exports PNG/PDF/video-style assets for publishing. Figma exports for engineering (inspect, Code Connect, MCP on paid tiers per pricing page). Neither is a print DTP replacement—Scribus covers that on the free Canva page.

Collaboration

Both sell multiplayer. Figma’s seat model (Full/Dev/Collab) is built around design↔dev. Canva’s Brand Kit and templates are built around marketing teams. Penpot is the open-source browser option we only read about (pricing).

What we saw nearby (Inkscape)

On related passes: Inkscape 1.4 exported a 1080×1080 social post to PNG/PDF and a 390×844 phone UI frame to PNG (8,707 bytes)—proof you can leave SaaS for static vector frames, not proof Canva≈Figma.

When to pick Canva

Social calendars, non-designer marketers, template velocity, Brand Kit consistency for campaigns.

When to pick Figma

App/web UI, design systems, prototyping, Dev Mode handoff, component libraries.

When to pick neither

Offline Linux vector work → Inkscape. Browser open-source UI → evaluate Penpot with an account. See Canva alternatives and Figma alternatives.

Team topology

Marketing-led orgs standardise on Canva because non-designers ship. Product-led orgs standardise on Figma because engineering handoff is the bottleneck. Forcing marketers into Figma components—or product designers into Canva Brand Kit—creates training cost that no seat discount erases. Hybrid companies often keep both and ban cross-job file formats.

Export honesty

Neither tool replaces print DTP. For SVG/PDF offline ownership, Inkscape remains the free path we ran. For open-source multiplayer UI, Penpot’s $0 plan is the docs-backed candidate—account required on hosted cloud.

Which is best for non-designers?

For marketing teams where non-designers ship the graphics, Canva is the better fit: its templates and Brand Kit are built for that, and marketing-led orgs standardise on it for exactly this reason. Figma pays off when the bottleneck is handing UI to engineers. If you want neither subscription, Inkscape is the free option we exported with on Linux. FAQ

Is Canva or Figma better?
Different jobs. Canva wins for marketing templates; Figma wins for UI components and design systems. We did not install either.
Can Figma replace Canva for Instagram posts?
It can draw frames, but it is not a Canva-class template/stock marketplace. Most social teams stay on Canva or Inkscape for that job.
Can Canva replace Figma for app UI?
Canva is weak as a component/design-token system versus Figma’s libraries and Dev Mode. Product teams usually stay on Figma or Penpot.
Free alternatives?
Inkscape exported related graphics on Linux. Penpot lists a $0 plan. See free Canva alternative and Figma alternatives.
Do Canva and Figma have free versions?
Per each vendor’s official pricing page as listed on this page (checked October 14, 2026): Canva — See Canva pricing page; Figma — Starter Free; Professional Full seat $16/mo (annual billing shown on pricing). Re-check the pricing page before you buy; plans change.
Can I move designs between Canva and Figma?
Not as live, editable projects. Canva exports PNG/PDF/video-style assets for publishing; Figma exports for engineering. Plan to rebuild layouts in the target tool and keep exported files as references. Neither replaces a print layout tool—Scribus covers that on our free Canva alternative page.
How do these tools handle my files and privacy?
We did not review the data-handling terms of Canva and Figma for this page; read each vendor’s privacy policy before uploading client files or personal data.
