Online whiteboards range from a blank canvas you can sketch on in ten seconds to full workshop tools with templates, voting and timers. The free plans reflect that range. Miro gives you three editable boards with unlimited team members, which suits a team that rotates through a few live sessions but runs out when you keep many boards open. Excalidraw and tldraw have no board count to worry about, work in the browser and look hand-drawn, which makes them good for architecture sketches and quick explanations. Draw.io is closer to a diagramming tool but doubles as a whiteboard for structured diagrams and saves to files you own. Whimsical caps free boards by object count, and Lucidchart limits you to three documents with 75 shapes each. WBO is the simplest of all: open a link and everybody draws. To choose, count how many boards you will keep alive at once and whether the session is live or async. For live meetings with many people, Miro is hard to beat on features. For private sketches or teaching, a no-account tool avoids the sign-up wall. The trade-off is persistence: tools without accounts rely on shared links or exported files, so decide where the board will be stored before you start.
Free plan gives 3 editable boards with unlimited team members. Strongest for workshops and templates, but the board cap is the first wall a busy team hits; Starter is $8 per member per month billed yearly.
