Verdict:OpenAI's API has no free tier on its pricing page; the cheapest listed model, gpt-5-nano, is $0.05 per 1M input tokens and $0.40 per 1M output. People searching for an alternative usually want one of three things: a free place to prototype, a lower bill, or independence from one vendor. For prototyping, Gemini's API is the clearest answer because Google lists a free tier for some Flash models, with limits that live on a separate page. For one key that reaches many vendors, OpenRouter is practical, though its free models are capped at 50 requests a day. For cost, compare per-token prices model by model, not vendor by vendor; Claude's Haiku 5.5 and Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite sit in the same $0.10 to $0.50 range as OpenAI's smallest model, so the savings come from picking the smallest model that passes your tests, not from switching logos. If privacy or zero marginal cost matters, run an open model with Ollama or llama.cpp, accepting lower quality than top hosted models and hardware costs of your own. The practical trade-off is prompts: a prompt tuned for GPT often needs retuning for another family, and structured-output or tool-call formats differ. Build a small test set before you move, run it against two candidates, and keep a thin wrapper so a later switch costs less.

OpenAI API today: Paid from $0.05 per 1M input tokens (gpt-5-nano; $0.40 per 1M output) (OpenAI API pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
OpenAI bills per token, and the bill depends on which tier you land in. The pricing page lists gpt-6-astra at $10 input and $50 output per million tokens, down to gpt-6-luna at $0.10 and $0.50. Fast (priority) processing costs about twice the standard rate, Ultrafast about six times, and inputs above 272K tokens carry a surcharge of roughly 2x on input and 1.5x on output. Web search adds $10 per 1,000 calls plus tokens. The pricing page lists no free API tier, so every prototype is metered.
Compared with OpenAI API: Claude's API is pay-per-token with no free tier. Haiku 5.5 lists $0.10 input and $0.50 output per 1M tokens for short prompts, against OpenAI's gpt-5-nano at $0.05 and $0.40. You gain a different model family; costs run similar.
Price: Paid from $0.1 per 1M input tokens (Claude Haiku 5.5, prompts up to 100K tokens; $0.50 per 1M output) (Claude API pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Web API. Proprietary.
Best for: Teams wanting a second frontier-model vendor.
Worth knowing: Pay per token; Sonnet 5.5 is $2 input / $10 output per 1M tokens.
Compared with OpenAI API: Gemini's API has a free tier with limited access to certain models and listed free-of-charge input and output for some Flash models. Paid, Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite is $0.10 input and $0.40 output. OpenAI has no comparable free API tier.
Price: Free (free tier with limited access to certain models; rate limits on a separate page); paid from $0.1 per 1M input tokens (Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite, paid tier; $0.40 per 1M output) (Gemini API pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Web API. Proprietary.
Best for: Prototyping without a billing account.
Compared with OpenAI API: Mistral's free plan covers limited access to its studio and chat, and its pricing page lists Mistral Large at $0.5 input and $1.5 output per 1M tokens. European vendor with open-weight options; the model line-up is smaller than OpenAI's.
Price: Free (Free plan with limited access to Vibe, chat and Mistral Studio); paid from $14.99 per month (Le Chat Pro) (Mistral AI pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Web API, Web. Proprietary.
Best for: EU-based teams and cost-aware usage.
Compared with OpenAI API: OpenRouter puts many providers behind one API. Its free models are capped at 50 requests a day, rising to 1,000 after buying $10 of credits, and credit purchases carry a 5.5% fee. You lose a direct vendor relationship but gain model switching.
Price: Free (free models limited to 20 requests/minute and 50 requests/day (1,000/day after buying $10 of credits)) (OpenRouter pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Web API. Proprietary.
Best for: Trying many models through one key.
Worth knowing: One API over many providers' models; 5.5% fee when buying credits on the Standard plan.
Compared with OpenAI API: Ollama runs open models on your own machine for free under MIT, unlimited by tokens, while OpenAI bills per token. You lose frontier model quality and need capable hardware; your data never leaves your machine.
Price: Free (running models on your own hardware is always unlimited; cloud Free plan has starter credits); paid from $20 per month (Pro, $60 of cloud usage credits) (Ollama pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: macOS, Linux, Windows. MIT (open source).
Project activity: 185k GitHub stars · latest release v0.40.12 (Oct 27, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Local development and private data.
Worth knowing: Platform list is from the project's download offering; confirm on ollama.com/download.
Compared with OpenAI API: llama.cpp is an MIT-licensed inference engine for running open models on your own hardware, with no per-token cost. Compared with OpenAI you take on model selection, hardware and tuning, and give up the hosted models' quality.
Price: Free (free open-source inference engine; you supply the hardware) (llama.cpp pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: macOS, Linux, Windows. MIT (open source).

Best for: Self-hosting inference with full control.
Worth knowing: License taken from the GitHub repository metadata.
Compared with OpenAI API: Cheaper per-token API: the Flash model is listed at $0.15 input and $0.60 output per million tokens off-peak, with rates doubling at peak hours. Compare with gpt-6-luna at $0.10 and $0.50 before assuming it is cheaper.
Price: Paid from $0.15 per 1M input tokens, cache miss, off-peak, API pay per token (DeepSeek pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
Compared with OpenAI API: Hosts open-weight models behind one pay-per-token API, e.g. gpt-oss-120B at $0.15 input and $0.60 output per million tokens. You trade OpenAI's own flagship models for open weights, plus dedicated GPU options.
Price: Paid from $0.14 per 1M tokens, serverless, input and output (Llama 3 8B Instruct Lite); other models cost more (Together AI pricing, checked 2026-10-25).
