Verdict:OpenRouter gives you one API and one bill across many providers' models. Its free models are limited to 20 requests a minute and 50 requests a day, or 1,000 a day after buying $10 of credits, and Standard charges a 5.5% fee when you buy credits. People usually leave for one of three reasons: the fee, the daily caps, or wanting the routing under their own control. If you want control, LiteLLM is the standard answer. It is an MIT-licensed gateway with an OpenAI-compatible interface, you bring your own provider keys, and the open-source version is free to self-host; enterprise features are quoted. Portkey does similar routing, adds guardrails and logs, and has a free hosted tier of 10k logs a month. Cloudflare AI Gateway is the lightest option, since its core features are free and it just sits in front of providers you already use. All three require you to hold accounts with each model provider, which means more invoices and more keys to rotate, and none give you OpenRouter's single catalog. If your goal is simply to avoid per-request costs while developing, Ollama runs open models locally without limits, though quality and speed depend on your hardware. Going direct to one vendor, such as the Gemini API with its free tier, is the simplest setup if you only need one family of models. Check each provider's data-handling terms before routing production traffic.
