Verdict:LM Studio is free to use at home and at work; the vendor dropped its separate commercial-license requirement in July 2025, and sells Enterprise and Teams plans for features such as SSO and private collaboration. So price is not the usual reason to leave. The usual reasons are that the app itself is not open source and that some people want a different workflow. If you want a free, fully open-source desktop app, Jan (Apache-2.0) and GPT4All (MIT) are the closest. Ollama is the more developer-oriented route: it runs models behind a local API, which makes it easy to connect to other tools, and it is MIT licensed. llama.cpp is the engine under many of these apps and suits you if you want the most control and do not need a graphical interface. AnythingLLM is the pick when your goal is asking questions about your own documents, not browsing and testing models. Open WebUI gives a team a browser-based interface on top of a backend such as Ollama, but its branding clause means it is not open source in the OSI sense. The trade-off is polish: LM Studio's built-in model discovery and settings are easy to use, and several of these tools make you do more yourself. Stay with LM Studio if it already runs your models well; move if you need open-source licensing or an API-first setup. We did not benchmark any of these.

LM Studio today: Free (free to use both at home and at work, no separate commercial license; Teams and Enterprise plans for sharing and SSO are sold separately with no price shown) (LM Studio pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
LM Studio is free at home and at work, but it is proprietary software. Its terms grant a licence for personal or internal business use and forbid modifying it, sublicensing or distributing it, offering it as a hosted service, or reverse engineering it. SSO, model gating and private sharing sit in separate Teams and Enterprise plans. People who want source code they can audit, fork or embed in their own product have to look at open-source runners.
Compared with LM Studio: MIT-licensed runner for models on your own hardware, with a command-line-first workflow and desktop apps. Less of a point-and-click model browser than LM Studio, but it is open source and the ecosystem around it is large.
Price: Free (running models on your own hardware is always unlimited; cloud Free plan has starter credits); paid from $20 per month (Pro, $60 of cloud usage credits) (Ollama pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Compared with LM Studio: MIT desktop app that adds documents and workspaces to local chat; Docker self-hosting is free. It focuses on chatting with your files rather than model browsing.
Price: Free (Desktop app free; self-hosting with Docker free; no limits stated); paid from $50 per month, Basic hosted plan billed monthly (Pro is $99 per month; Enterprise custom) (AnythingLLM pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Project activity: 67.7k GitHub stars · latest release v1.19.0 (Oct 26, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Chatting with your own documents.
Compared with LM Studio: Self-hosted web interface for local models, under a license with a branding clause, so not open source by OSI standards. It needs a model backend, so it complements rather than replaces LM Studio.
Price: Free (Self-hosted under the license; branding must stay unless under 50 users in a rolling 30 days or with permission) (Open WebUI pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
Platforms and license: Web, Self-hosted. Open WebUI License (BSD-3-style terms plus a branding clause).
Best for: Browser access to local models for a team.
Worth knowing: The site lists enterprise options without prices. The license is not an OSI open-source license because of the branding clause, so openSource is false.
