GitHub Copilot alternatives: Continue, Cline, aider, Zed and 2 more. Prices and licenses checked October 28, 2026.

Verdict:GitHub Copilot's Free plan caps you at 2,000 completions a month with entry-level models, and Pro is $10 a month. If the cap is the problem, the cheapest alternatives are open-source tools where you pay only for the model: Continue, Cline and aider are all Apache-2.0. Continue is the closest to Copilot because it lives in VS Code or JetBrains and offers autocomplete as well as chat. Cline and aider lean toward agentic work, where the model edits several files for you; aider does this from the terminal and commits each change to git. The catch is cost predictability. With a flat subscription you know the bill; with your own API key, a long agent session can cost more than Copilot Pro, so set a spending limit with your provider. If you would rather change editors, Zed offers a free Personal plan and a $10 Pro plan, and Cursor is the full AI-first editor, with a $30 Premium tier for third-party models. Amazon Q Developer is worth considering mostly for AWS-heavy teams, at $19 per user for Pro. One more thing to check is your company's rules: many teams use Copilot because of its business controls and IP terms, and the open-source route moves those decisions to you. Try one alternative on a real task for a week before switching.

GitHub Copilot today: Free (Free plan: 2,000 completions per month and entry-level models); paid from $10 per month (Pro; Pro+ is $39) (GitHub Copilot pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Copilot's pricing now runs on credits. The plans page lists Free with limited chat and agent usage and 2,000 completions a month, Pro at $10 with about $15 of credits, Pro+ at $39 with about $70, and Max at $100 with about $200. One credit equals one cent, usage beyond the allowance is billed, and the page gives no per-request price because cost depends on the model and task. Inline completions do not consume credits, but heavy agent users can see their allowance run out and have to budget extra usage.
Compared with GitHub Copilot: Continue is an Apache-2.0 extension for VS Code and JetBrains with chat, edit, agent and autocomplete modes. Unlike Copilot's flat $10 plan, you bring your own model or API key, so you control the cost and the model, but you set it up yourself.
