Verdict:Open WebUI is free to self-host, but its licence is not a standard open-source one: it is BSD-3-style with a branding clause, and the branding must stay unless you have under 50 users in a rolling 30 days or have permission. That clause is the most common reason teams look elsewhere, particularly anyone reselling or white-labelling a chat front end. LibreChat is the nearest like-for-like swap and is MIT licensed, with multi-user login, an admin panel and support for many hosted and local model providers. AnythingLLM is better when the point is chatting over your own files, and its desktop version is free. Jan keeps everything in a single-user desktop app with no server. Ollama and llama.cpp are runtimes rather than interfaces: they can sit underneath Open WebUI or LibreChat, so they are a replacement only if you can live with a command line or a minimal page. The trade-off is feature breadth. Open WebUI is built around a rich browser interface, and the alternatives tend to specialise in either team management or local simplicity, not both. If the branding clause does not affect you, there is little reason to move. If it does, start with LibreChat.

Open WebUI today: Free (Self-hosted under the license; branding must stay unless under 50 users in a rolling 30 days or with permission) (Open WebUI pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
Open WebUI releases after v0.6.5 carry a license with a branding clause: you may not alter, remove or obscure the Open WebUI name or logo unless you have 50 or fewer users in 30 days, hold an enterprise license, or get written permission. Co-branding is not permitted, and white-labeling for resale needs an enterprise or proprietary license. The docs state the newer license is not OSI-approved; versions up to v0.6.5 remain BSD-3.
