Verdict:AnythingLLM is a chat front end with its own document workspace, and people leave it when they want a server for a team, a free app with no hosted tier, or a lower-level stack. Its desktop app is free, self-hosting with Docker is free, and the hosted plans start at $50 a month on Basic and $99 on Pro. Open WebUI is the closest move for a team: it runs as a self-hosted server, but its license adds a branding clause that applies above 50 users in a rolling 30-day period unless you have permission. Jan is the zero-cost swap for one person, a free Apache-2.0 desktop app that runs local models with no hosted tier to buy. Ollama and llama.cpp are for people who want to script the model layer and bring their own interface, since neither ships a chat window. OpenRouter fits when you want cloud models without a monthly plan. Pick by the constraint that matters: team access, cost, or control over every layer.

AnythingLLM today: Free (Desktop app free; self-hosting with Docker free; no limits stated); paid from $50 per month, Basic hosted plan billed monthly (Pro is $99 per month; Enterprise custom) (AnythingLLM pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
AnythingLLM's Desktop app and Docker self-hosting are free, but the managed step is a flat jump: Basic is $50 a month for a private instance and Pro is $99 a month. SSO and role-based access control appear only under Enterprise, which is quote-based, and no user or workspace limits are listed for Basic and Pro, nor which multi-user features each tier gets.
Compared with AnythingLLM: Self-hosted chat interface under the Open WebUI License, which adds a branding clause to BSD-style terms. Against AnythingLLM you gain a multi-user server setup and lose the simplicity of a desktop download.
