Verdict:Claude Code is included in Claude Pro, which is $17 a month billed annually or $20 monthly, and Max starts at $100; it is not in the Free plan, and you can also pay by API usage. If the cost or the usage limits are the problem, the free alternatives all share one catch: you supply the model, so the real price is whatever your provider charges. OpenCode is the nearest match in feel, with a terminal interface, desktop app and IDE extension, and it includes some free models, so you can try it without paying. Aider and Cline are older, widely used open-source options, with aider working from the terminal and committing to git, and Cline living inside VS Code or JetBrains. Goose is broader than coding and is worth a look if you also want it to run other tasks on your machine. Codex CLI is the direct competitor: it needs a ChatGPT plan or API credits but works much like Claude Code. What you give up is the tight loop between Anthropic's models and the tool: subagents, hooks, skills, scheduled tasks and a consistent experience across terminal, IDE, desktop and web. Quality also varies with the model you route to, so a weaker model will make any of these feel worse than Claude Code does. Run the same real task in two tools before you decide, and watch the token bill as well as the result.

Why people look for Claude Code alternatives

Claude Code is not available on the Free plan; it needs Pro at $17 per month billed annually ($20 monthly), Max from $100 per month, or a Team seat at $20 billed annually (2 to 150 seats). Usage is shared with the rest of the plan and resets on a rolling five-hour window, with weekly limits on paid plans. After hitting a limit you wait or switch on usage credits billed at API rates.
