Good fit if

  • You want it working in your editor today with no setup (GitHub Copilot is the pick)
  • You already pay for an API key and want no second bill (Cline is the pick)
  • You want to run models locally for free (goose is the pick)
  • You work mostly in the terminal with git (aider is the pick)
  • You want an agent with no key at all (OpenCode is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

A free AI code assistant is free in one of three ways, and the way matters more than the feature list. Some products give you a capped free tier of a hosted service: GitHub Copilot lists 2,000 completions a month and Amazon Q Developer lists 50 agentic requests a month, so a busy week can use them up. Others are open-source tools, such as Continue, Cline, aider, goose and OpenCode, where the software costs nothing but you connect your own model, either a paid API key or a local model you run yourself. A third group, such as Cursor, offers a free tier with a small allowance and expects you to upgrade. Pick the capped hosted tier if you want something working in the editor within minutes and write code at a modest pace. Pick an open-source agent if you already pay for a model provider or want to run models locally, because then the tool adds no second bill and no usage cap of its own. The trade-off is setup and cost control: with your own key, a long agent session can spend real money without any warning from the tool itself. Check which editor you use before anything else, since several of these work only in VS Code or the terminal. The eight tools below each state the limit that applies.

GitHub Copilot

The easiest hosted start inside VS Code, JetBrains and Visual Studio, but the free plan stops at 2,000 completions a month and entry-level models. Pro is $10 a month if you outgrow it.

Continue

An Apache-2.0 extension and CLI with chat, agent, edit and autocomplete modes. The software is free, but you supply a model or API key, so your real cost depends on the provider you connect.

Cline

An Apache-2.0 agent for VS Code, JetBrains and the terminal that works with Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Ollama models. It is free to install and you pay only your AI provider, so long tasks can get expensive.

Cursor

A full AI editor with a free tier that has a small allowance of agent and chat requests. Plus is $8 a month, and third-party model usage is billed separately, so the free tier is a trial more than a home.
