Verdict:Replit is a hosted browser IDE, so the question is whether you want the AI and hosting bundled, or your own editor and runtime. Cursor is a desktop editor with an AI agent and a free tier with a small request allowance; its Plus plan is listed at $8 a month. Zed is GPL-3.0 open source with a $0 Personal plan that uses your own API keys, which suits developers who want a fast native editor. VSCodium gives you the VS Code experience as an MIT-licensed build without Microsoft's telemetry, at no cost. Cline is an Apache-2.0 agent that works inside your editor, billed to the model provider you connect, so you pay for tokens directly. Aider is a free terminal pair programmer for a repository you already have. Replit has a free Starter plan with daily credits and one published app that goes offline after 30 days. Its Core plan starts at $18 a month billed annually, which is the number to beat once a hobby project outgrows that. The trade-off is hosting. Once you leave Replit you need your own place to run and deploy the app, and that work does not go away with the editor. Decide where the app will run before you switch editors.
