Verdict:Cursor's free tier is small, Plus is $8 a month but limited to Grok models, and Premium at $30 is where third-party models start, with extra model usage billed separately. If that pricing is the reason you are looking, the cheapest route keeps the editor and moves the AI into an extension. VSCodium or plain VS Code plus Continue or Cline gives you chat, edits and agents, and you pay only your model provider by usage. All three tools are open source, and Continue is the closest to Cursor's daily feel because it also does autocomplete. Aider suits people who live in the terminal and want every change committed to git. If you want a different editor rather than an extension, Zed has a free Personal plan for your own API keys and a $10 Pro plan. GitHub Copilot is the easy answer when you want one flat price: Pro is $10 and the Free plan covers 2,000 completions a month. The trade-off is cost predictability. A flat subscription has a ceiling, while bring-your-own-key tools can run up a larger bill during a long agent session, so set a spending limit with your provider before you start. You also give up Cursor's tight integration between its editor, its indexing and its agent, which is hard to reproduce with parts. Try one alternative on a real task for a week before cancelling.

Cursor today: Free (Free tier with a small allowance of agent and chat requests); paid from $8 per month (Plus, Grok models only; Premium is $30) (Cursor pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Cursor's Free tier has limited agent and Chat requests. Plus at $8 per month runs Grok models only; third-party models arrive on Premium at $30 per month and are billed separately at API list price, with usage allowances that refresh weekly. Heavier tiers are Super at $100 (15x Plus usage) and Ultra at $200 (50x), and Teams starts at $30 per user. Spend can climb with model choice.
Compared with Cursor: Continue is an Apache-2.0 extension for VS Code and JetBrains with chat, edit, agent and autocomplete modes. Cursor ships its own editor and bundles models; Continue keeps your editor and lets you bring any model or API key, at the cost of setting it up yourself.
Price: Free (free open-source extension and CLI; you bring your own model or API key) (Continue pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: VS Code, JetBrains. Apache-2.0 (open source).

Compared with Cursor: Cline is an Apache-2.0 coding agent for VS Code, JetBrains and the terminal that works with Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Ollama models. It has no Cursor-style tab completion, but you pay only your model provider, by usage, instead of a Cursor plan.
Price: Free (free open-source agent; you use your own AI provider) (Cline pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: VS Code, JetBrains, macOS, Windows, CLI. Apache-2.0 (open source).

Best for: Agent-style coding with your own API key.
Compared with Cursor: aider is an Apache-2.0 terminal tool that maps your codebase and commits each change to git. There is no editor and no inline completion as in Cursor, but it is free and works with many models, including local ones.
Price: Free (free tool; you pay your LLM provider or run local models) (aider pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: macOS, Linux, Windows. GPL-3.0 (open source).
Project activity: 92.3k GitHub stars · latest release v1.25.3 (Oct 23, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Developers open to a faster, non-VS Code editor.
Compared with Cursor: VSCodium is an MIT build of the VS Code source with telemetry turned off. It is Cursor's base editor without the AI layer, so you add Continue or Cline yourself, and it uses Open VSX, so some Marketplace-only extensions will not install.
Price: Free (community builds of VS Code source with telemetry disabled) (VSCodium pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. MIT (open source).
Project activity: 33.8k GitHub stars · latest release 1.143.17183 (Oct 26, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Free VS Code without telemetry, AI added by extension.
Worth knowing: It uses the Open VSX registry instead of Microsoft's Marketplace, so some extensions with restrictive licenses may not work.
Compared with Cursor: GitHub Copilot works inside your current editor. Its Free plan allows 2,000 completions a month and Pro is $10, against Cursor Plus at $8 limited to Grok models or Premium at $30. You lose Cursor's editor-wide agent workflow but keep your setup.

Best for: A flat-price assistant in the editor you already use.

Price: Paid from $17 per month, billed annually (Claude Pro; $20 billed monthly; Max from $100) (Claude Code pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
