Verdict:Resolve is already free, so leave it only for a lighter tool or a different workflow. The DaVinci Resolve product page says the free version handles 8-bit video up to Ultra HD 3840x2160 at 60fps, and that Studio was on sale at $236, down from $295, when checked on October 28, 2026; Blackmagic's Studio 20 features PDF lists an activation key, licence dongle or Blackmagic Cloud licensing, and its Cloud help page describes rental licences. The cost most people hit is not price but hardware and learning time, since Resolve combines edit, colour, effects and audio in one heavy application. Kdenlive and Shotcut are free, open-source editors that cover the cutting job with less to learn, and OpenShot is simpler again for beginners. Clipchamp runs in the browser and exports 1080p without a watermark on its free plan, which is enough for most web videos. CapCut fits short-form social clips, and its Pro plan is $19.99 a month. The trade-off is depth. None of these has Resolve's colour grading or its Fusion and Fairlight tabs, so a colourist or a documentary editor will miss them. A hobbyist cutting family or YouTube videos on a modest laptop will probably be happier with Kdenlive or Shotcut. Stay with Resolve if your machine runs it well and you care about grading or you plan to move into paid work later. Switch if the interface slows you down.
