Verdict:ZBrush is subscription-only, so check Maxon's page for the current price. An older report put it at $49 a month or $399 a year, which may be out of date. For most hobbyists the cost is the reason to look around, and Blender is the first stop: it is free for any purpose and includes sculpting, but you give up ZBrush's specialised brush workflow and its very dense-mesh handling. If you sculpt on an iPad, Nomad Sculpt is about $35 one-time with a free desktop trial and is the cheapest serious option here. 3DCoat costs EUR 379 as a one-time licence with 12 months of updates and a 30-day trial, so it suits people who want a paid desktop sculptor without a subscription. Wings 3D is free, but it is a subdivision modeler, not a sculptor, so use it for hard-surface base meshes. SculptGL works in a browser, though it was archived in January 2026. Professionals with a ZBrush-centred pipeline should keep it; hobbyists should start with Blender and add Nomad only if a tablet matters.

Why people look for ZBrush alternatives

ZBrush is sold as a Maxon subscription: the product page shows no price and mentions no perpetual option. Every subscription includes ZBrush on desktop and iPad, plus Redshift rendering and training, and a 14-day trial covers ZBrush and the full Maxon One suite. Maxon One adds Cinema 4D, Red Giant, Universe and Capsules for a larger bundle.

Blender

Compared with ZBrush: Free for any purpose, including commercial work, and includes sculpting alongside modeling. You lose ZBrush's dedicated sculpting workflow and brush ecosystem, and gain an all-in-one package with no licence cost.

Price: Free (Free for any purpose, including commercial work) (Blender pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. GPL-3.0-or-later (open source).

Best for: Free all-round 3D including sculpting.

Worth knowing: Texture painting and baking are built in, with node-based shading; no layer stack with smart materials like Painter.

Nomad Sculpt

Compared with ZBrush: About $35 USD one-time, on desktop and on iPhone, iPad and Android. Much cheaper than a ZBrush subscription and good for touch devices, but a smaller tool; the desktop app can be tried free.

Price: Paid from $35 per one-time (1 license key for 2 computers; mobile store prices not listed) (Nomad Sculpt pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, iPhone, iPad, Android. Proprietary.

Best for: Cheap sculpting on a tablet.

3DCoat

Compared with ZBrush: One-time licence at EUR 379 with 12 months of updates, 30-day trial. Closer to ZBrush for digital sculpting and texturing and costs more up front than Nomad, with no subscription required.

Price: Paid from EUR 379 per one-time, Individual node-locked 3DCoat 2026 (VAT excluded) (3DCoat pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Proprietary.

Best for: Paid sculpting with a one-time price.

Wings 3D

Compared with ZBrush: Free and open source subdivision modeler. It is not a sculpting tool like ZBrush, so you lose brush-based sculpting and gain simple, fast polygon modeling at no cost.

Price: Free (Free and open source) (Wings 3D pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. BSD (open source).

Project activity: 671 GitHub stars · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Free polygon modeling.

SculptGL

Compared with ZBrush: MIT-licensed browser sculpting app, free to try with no install. Its repository was archived in January 2026 and is no longer maintained, so treat it as a quick toy, not a ZBrush replacement.

Price: Free (Free; runs in the browser) (SculptGL pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Web (WebGL), Electron standalone build. MIT (open source).

Project activity: 1.5k GitHub stars · Archived on GitHub

Best for: Quick browser sculpts.

Cinema 4D

Compared with ZBrush: Cinema 4D is another Maxon product and is named on ZBrush's page as part of the Maxon One bundle. Maxon's Cinema 4D page shows no price, so confirm the cost before choosing it.

Price: See pricing page (Cinema 4D pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
