Adobe Substance 3D Painter alternatives: Blender, ArmorPaint, Material Maker, Mari and 1 more. Prices and licenses checked October 23, 2026.

Verdict:Substance 3D Painter is sold through Adobe's Substance 3D Collection at $59.99 per month for individuals, with a 30-day trial. That subscription is the main reason people look elsewhere, along with wanting a tool that works with their own pipeline. If you already use Blender, start there: texture painting, baking and PBR shading are built in and free for commercial work, though you will rebuild smart materials by hand. ArmorPaint is the nearest to Painter's layer and brush model and costs $19 for the binaries, or nothing if you compile it yourself, but it is a small project with fewer polish and integration features. Material Maker covers the procedural side that Substance Designer handles, rather than painting on a mesh. Mari is the professional alternative for film and VFX with many UDIM tiles, and it has a free non-commercial edition, but commercial licenses cost more than Adobe's collection. 3DCoat is the pick for artists who want to sculpt, retopologize and paint in a single tool and prefer owning a license. You give up Substance's library of smart materials and the broad support from game engines and marketplaces, so check which asset formats your studio accepts before switching.
