Verdict:Before switching, export a month of your real log volume and test the query patterns you use daily, because SPL is the hardest thing to replace. Grafana is the most common switch: it is free to self-host and handles logs and metrics in one place, though its log search does not match Splunk's depth. Elasticsearch and OpenSearch give full-text search over large volumes; OpenSearch is the simpler license to live with because it is Apache-2.0, while Elasticsearch's triple license needs a legal read. SigNoz is a good fit if you also need traces, since it bundles them under an MIT core. Graylog suits teams that want log alerting with fewer moving parts, but its SSPL code is source-available rather than open source. Splunk stays the better fit for teams whose searches and alerts are already built on SPL. For most small and mid-sized teams, the switch works best when you move one log source first and keep Splunk running in parallel until the alerts match.

Good fit if

  • Metrics and logs in one dashboard tool (Grafana is the pick)
  • Heavy full-text search across big log volumes (OpenSearch is the pick)
  • Logs plus traces in one open-source stack (SigNoz is the pick)
  • You want lower-cost alerting over logs (Graylog is the pick)
  • Search cluster you can run and tune (Elasticsearch is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on Splunk features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

Splunk today: Free (Splunk Observability Cloud Free Edition: up to 15 hosts, no time limit, no credit card; Splunk Enterprise has a 60-day trial (500 MB/day) before a free license) (Splunk pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Why people look for Splunk alternatives

Splunk prices by several models depending on the product: activity-based, ingest, workload or entity. Its pricing page gives no per-GB ingest rate, so ingest cost has to be quoted by sales, and overage charges apply once you consistently exceed purchased ingestion or storage. Only Observability Cloud shows host prices: Infrastructure from $15, App & Infra from $60 and End-to-End from $75 per host per month, billed annually. Volume discounts require talking to a pricing expert.

Grafana

Compared with Splunk: Self-hosted Grafana is free under AGPL-3.0; cloud free tier includes 10k metric series and 50 GB of logs. Good for metrics and dashboards, but log search is less deep than Splunk's SPL.

Price: Free (10k metric series, 50 GB logs, 50 GB traces, 3 users, 14-day retention); paid from $19 per month platform fee plus usage (Cloud Pro) (Grafana pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, Self-hosted, Grafana Cloud. AGPL-3.0 (open source).

Project activity: 77.6k GitHub stars · latest release v13.3.0 (Oct 27, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Teams that want dashboards plus logs and metrics.

Worth knowing: Self-hosted Grafana is free; Cloud adds hosted Prometheus, Loki, Tempo and IRM (incident response and on-call) with 3 free IRM users.

Elasticsearch

Compared with Splunk: Self-managed Basic license is free, with paid tiers priced by nodes and RAM. Powerful search over logs, but the license mix (AGPL, SSPL, Elastic) needs checking before you ship it.

Price: Free (self-managed Basic license; Elastic Cloud offers a free trial); paid from $99 per month, Elastic Cloud Hosted Standard (estimate for 120 GB, 2 zones) (Elasticsearch pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted, Elastic Cloud. AGPL-3.0, SSPL or Elastic License 2.0 (triple license) (open source).

Project activity: 78.4k GitHub stars · latest release v9.5.5 (Oct 6, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Full-text search over large log volumes.

Worth knowing: Self-managed paid tiers are priced by nodes and RAM; no number is published.

OpenSearch

Compared with Splunk: Apache-2.0 fork of Elasticsearch 7.10 with free self-hosting. Clear license, but you run the cluster and build dashboards yourself.

Price: Free (OpenSearch pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted. Apache-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 13.9k GitHub stars · latest release 3.9.0 (Sep 29, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Open-source log search on your own servers.

Worth knowing: Forked from Elasticsearch 7.10; managed versions are sold by cloud vendors, not priced here.

SigNoz

Compared with Splunk: MIT core with an ee/ directory under a separate license. Self-hosted Community Edition is free; the cloud Teams plan starts at $49 a month with usage charges.

Price: Free (self-hosted Community Edition; cloud shows no free allowance); paid from $49 per month incl. $49 of usage (Cloud Teams) (SigNoz pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, Self-hosted, SigNoz Cloud. MIT (ee/ directory under a separate license) (open source).

Project activity: 32.5k GitHub stars · latest release v0.147.0 (Oct 22, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Open-source observability with traces.

Worth knowing: Cloud usage: logs and traces $0.30/GB, metrics $0.10 per million samples.

Graylog

Compared with Splunk: Server code under SSPL v1, which is not an OSI open-source license. It covers log search and alerting; pricing was not read for this page, so no cost comparison is made.

Price: Free (Server source is published under SSPL v1 and described as a free and open log management platform; no cloud price checked) (Graylog pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted (Linux), Cloud. Server Side Public License v1.

Best for: Lower-cost log management with alerts.

Datadog

Compared with Splunk: Infrastructure Pro is $15 per host per month billed annually, the same as Splunk's Observability Cloud Infrastructure tier, and a free plan covers up to 5 hosts with one-day metric retention. Logs and APM are priced separately.

Price: Free (up to 5 hosts, 1-day metric retention); paid from $15 per host/month, billed annually (Infrastructure Pro; $18 on demand) (Datadog pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

New Relic

Compared with Splunk: Bills by data ingest rather than per host: 100 GB a month and one full platform user are free, then $0.40 per GB on Standard. Full platform users cost extra, $10 for the first and $99 for each additional, up to five.

Price: Free (100 GB data ingest per month, 1 full platform user); paid from $0.4 per GB ingested beyond the free 100 GB (Standard) (New Relic pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
