Verdict:Leave Datadog if the bill grows faster than the value, which usually happens once log and APM volume pile on top of the $15 per host Infrastructure Pro price. Most teams do not need to replace everything at once. The cheapest realistic move is Prometheus for metrics with Grafana for dashboards and alerts; both are open source and cost only the servers they run. The trade-off is real: you now own upgrades, storage sizing and retention, and nobody pages you at 3 a.m. except you. If you want logs and traces in the same tool, SigNoz is the nearest open-source match to Datadog's single pane, and its Community Edition is free to self-host. Zabbix suits mixed estates with network gear and older servers, where templates matter more than cloud integrations. Netdata is the quickest way to see what a host is doing today. New Relic is the pick when you still want a hosted product with no infrastructure to run; its free tier gives 100 GB of ingest, but costs move to per-user pricing once more people need full access. Whichever you choose, migrate one service first, keep Datadog running in parallel for a month, and compare alert quality before cutting over. Dashboards and monitors do not export cleanly, so budget time to rebuild the ones you actually use.

Good fit if

  • You already run Kubernetes and want free metrics with your own dashboards (Prometheus is the pick)
  • You want logs, traces and metrics in one open-source tool (SigNoz is the pick)
  • You manage old servers and network devices on-prem (Zabbix is the pick)
  • You want a hosted product with a real free tier (New Relic is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on Datadog features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

Datadog today: Free (up to 5 hosts, 1-day metric retention); paid from $15 per host/month, billed annually (Infrastructure Pro; $18 on demand) (Datadog pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for Datadog alternatives

Datadog prices each product separately. Infrastructure Pro is $15 per host a month on annual billing ($18 on demand) and Enterprise $23 ($27). APM starts at $31 per host and needs Pro or Enterprise infrastructure on every APM host, with one APM tier for all hosts. Logs cost $0.10 per ingested GB plus $1.70 per million events indexed for 15 days. Custom metrics beyond the 100 per Pro host are billed on usage with no listed rate, and the free tier covers 5 hosts with 1-day retention.

Grafana

Compared with Datadog: Open-source dashboards you can self-host, plus a Cloud free tier of 10k series and 50 GB of logs. You lose Datadog's one-agent setup and built-in APM polish, but gain control over data and a much lower entry price.

Price: Free (10k metric series, 50 GB logs, 50 GB traces, 3 users, 14-day retention); paid from $19 per month platform fee plus usage (Cloud Pro) (Grafana pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, Self-hosted, Grafana Cloud. AGPL-3.0 (open source).

Project activity: 77.6k GitHub stars · latest release v13.3.0 (Oct 27, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Teams that already run Prometheus.

Worth knowing: Self-hosted Grafana is free; Cloud adds hosted Prometheus, Loki, Tempo and IRM (incident response and on-call) with 3 free IRM users.

Prometheus

Compared with Datadog: Free, Apache-2.0 metrics and alerting. Unlike Datadog it has no logs, traces or hosted UI, so you assemble the rest yourself, but there is no per-host bill and exporters cover most infrastructure.

Price: Free (Prometheus pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted (Go binary). Apache-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 66.8k GitHub stars · latest release v3.15.1 (Oct 21, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Metrics-first Kubernetes shops.

Worth knowing: Metrics and alerting only; no built-in dashboards beyond a basic expression browser, so it is usually paired with Grafana.

SigNoz

Compared with Datadog: Open-source metrics, logs and traces in one tool, closest to Datadog's all-in-one model. Self-hosted Community Edition is free; Cloud Teams starts at $49 a month. Fewer integrations and a smaller ecosystem than Datadog.

Price: Free (self-hosted Community Edition; cloud shows no free allowance); paid from $49 per month incl. $49 of usage (Cloud Teams) (SigNoz pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, Self-hosted, SigNoz Cloud. MIT (ee/ directory under a separate license) (open source).

Project activity: 32.5k GitHub stars · latest release v0.147.0 (Oct 22, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Small teams wanting OpenTelemetry-native APM.

Worth knowing: Cloud usage: logs and traces $0.30/GB, metrics $0.10 per million samples.

Zabbix

Compared with Datadog: Free AGPL-3.0 infrastructure monitor with agents, SNMP and templates for servers and network gear. It is older and less cloud-native than Datadog, with weaker APM, but it has no host fees and runs fully on your side.

Price: Free (Zabbix pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted, Zabbix Cloud. AGPL-3.0 (7.0 and later); GPL-2.0 up to 6.4 (open source).

Project activity: 6.5k GitHub stars · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Server and network monitoring on-prem.

Netdata

Compared with Datadog: Per-second host metrics with auto-detected dashboards. Free cloud tier covers 5 nodes for non-commercial use; Business is $4.50 per node a month, far below Datadog's $15 per host. Log and trace depth is thinner than Datadog's.

Price: Free (Cloud Community: 5 active nodes, personal non-commercial use); paid from $4.5 per node/month (Business) (Netdata pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Linux, macOS, Windows, FreeBSD, Docker, Kubernetes. GPL-3.0+ (Agent); UI and Cloud closed source (open source).

Project activity: 81.2k GitHub stars · latest release v2.12.2 (Oct 23, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Fast host and container visibility.

Worth knowing: Homelab plan is $90 per year for unlimited nodes, non-commercial.

New Relic

Compared with Datadog: Full-stack SaaS closest to Datadog's scope, with 100 GB of ingest and one full platform user free each month. Pricing is by data and users, not hosts, which can be cheaper or dearer depending on volume.

Price: Free (100 GB data ingest per month, 1 full platform user); paid from $0.4 per GB ingested beyond the free 100 GB (Standard) (New Relic pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web. Proprietary SaaS.

Best for: Teams wanting a hosted, usage-priced platform.

Worth knowing: Full platform users cost extra: $10 for the first on Standard, $99 for each additional (max 5).

Splunk

Compared with Datadog: Splunk Observability Cloud has a Free Edition for up to 15 hosts with no time limit, against Datadog's 5-host free tier. Splunk Enterprise has a 60-day trial before a free license; paid pricing is not listed as numbers.

Price: Free (Splunk Observability Cloud Free Edition: up to 15 hosts, no time limit, no credit card; Splunk Enterprise has a 60-day trial (500 MB/day) before a free license) (Splunk pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
