Verdict:Looker is Google's governed BI tool, and its main draw is LookML, the modeling layer that keeps metric definitions consistent. Leave it when your team is small and your metrics are simple, because the modeling layer then costs more than it saves. Metabase is the most direct replacement: its open-source edition is free to self-host, and it covers dashboards and questions without a modeling language. Apache Superset suits teams whose analysts write SQL and who can host the stack themselves under Apache-2.0. Data Studio is free for reporting on Google sources, but it does not replace the governed model that Looker offers. Power BI and Tableau are the enterprise rivals; Power BI is cheaper per seat for Microsoft shops, while Tableau has the deepest visual analysis and the highest seat price. Looker's own pricing page was not read for this page, so no Looker price is claimed here. The trade-off to accept is that you rebuild your metric definitions outside LookML, and that work is the real migration cost, not the software fee.
