Verdict:Docker Desktop is the part most teams pay for. The Docker pricing page lists Personal for one user, Pro at $9 per user per month on annual billing and Team at $15 on annual billing. Before paying, decide whether you need the desktop app at all, or only a container engine on a server. Podman is the nearest replacement: it runs without a daemon, is Apache-2.0, and on Linux needs no VM. Rancher Desktop is the better fit when your local work includes Kubernetes manifests, since it ships both in one Apache-2.0 app. Colima gives a lighter runtime for Mac developers who prefer the command line and do not want a GUI. Docker Swarm and K3s are server-side choices rather than laptop replacements; use them when you run clusters, not when you need a dev environment. Stay with Docker if your team depends on Docker Hub pull limits, Docker Scout or Docker Desktop's extensions. Leave it once you have more than one paid seat and most of your work runs in plain Linux containers, because Podman or Colima will cover that without a per-user cost.

Good fit if

  • Individual developer who wants no desktop fee (Podman is the pick)
  • Developer working on Kubernetes manifests on a laptop (Rancher Desktop is the pick)
  • Mac user who lives in the terminal (Colima is the pick)
  • Small multi-host cluster without Kubernetes (Docker Swarm mode is the pick)
  • Servers or edge nodes that need full Kubernetes (K3s is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on Docker features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

Docker today: Free (Personal: 1 user, 1 private Docker Hub repo, 100 pulls per hour); paid from $9 per user/month, billed annually (Pro) (Docker pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Why people look for Docker alternatives

Docker Personal is free but limited to one user, one private Docker Hub repository and 100 image pulls per hour. Paid tiers lift those caps: Pro is $9 per user per month billed annually ($11 monthly) for a single user, Team is $15 annually ($16 monthly) for up to 100 users, and Business is $24 annually with unlimited users. Moving a team beyond one seat therefore means a per-user subscription.

Podman

Compared with Docker: Daemonless engine under Apache-2.0 with no per-user desktop fee. On Linux it is native; on macOS and Windows it needs a VM, so expect more setup than Docker Desktop.

Price: Free (Podman pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Linux, macOS, Windows. Apache-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 33.1k GitHub stars · latest release v6.1.4 (Oct 12, 2026) · last commit Oct 28, 2026

Best for: Linux servers and rootless containers.

Worth knowing: Container engine that runs without a daemon. Linux is native; on macOS and Windows it runs inside a virtual machine, per the install docs. Free under Apache-2.0.

Rancher Desktop

Compared with Docker: Apache-2.0 desktop app that runs containers and Kubernetes together. It removes the Docker Desktop seat fee, but you give up Docker Hub's pull limits and Scout integration.

Price: Free (Open-source application; no price listed on the page) (Rancher Desktop pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Apache-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 7.4k GitHub stars · latest release v1.24.0 (Jul 29, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Local Kubernetes work on a laptop.

Colima

Compared with Docker: MIT command-line runtime for macOS and Linux with no GUI. Cheapest for terminal-first developers; you trade the Docker Desktop dashboard for config files.

Price: Free (Open source under MIT; no paid plan) (Colima pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: macOS, Linux. MIT (open source).

Project activity: 31.4k GitHub stars · latest release v0.10.3 (Jun 4, 2026) · last commit Oct 13, 2026

Best for: Mac developers who live in the terminal.

Worth knowing: Command-line tool that runs container runtimes on macOS and Linux with no desktop app.

Docker Swarm mode

Compared with Docker: Built into Docker Engine under Apache-2.0 for multi-host clusters. Simpler than Kubernetes, but its docs say classic Swarm is no longer actively developed.

Price: Free (Docker Swarm mode pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Docker Engine. Apache-2.0 (Moby engine) (open source).

Project activity: 72.2k GitHub stars · latest release docker-v29.9.2 (Oct 20, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Small multi-host clusters.

Worth knowing: Built into Docker Engine. Docs note the separate Classic Swarm is no longer actively developed.

K3s

Compared with Docker: Single-binary Kubernetes under Apache-2.0 for servers and edge nodes. Heavier to learn than Docker, but it is the path if your team is moving to Kubernetes.

Price: Free (K3s pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Linux. Apache-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 34.3k GitHub stars · latest release v1.37.1+k3s1 (Sep 30, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Lightweight Kubernetes on servers.

Worth knowing: A lightweight Kubernetes distribution in a single binary under 100 MB, not a replacement for the Kubernetes API.

OrbStack

Compared with Docker: Free for personal, non-commercial use; commercial use needs Pro at $8 per user per month billed annually ($96 a year), a dollar under Docker Pro. It is a macOS-only Docker Desktop replacement.

Price: Free (Free for personal, non-commercial use: containers and Linux machines, community support); paid from $8 per user/month, billed annually ($96 per year); Pro covers commercial use (OrbStack pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Which one to pick

  • Individual developer who wants no desktop fee: Podman
  • Developer working on Kubernetes manifests on a laptop: Rancher Desktop
  • Mac user who lives in the terminal: Colima
  • Small multi-host cluster without Kubernetes: Docker Swarm mode
  • Servers or edge nodes that need full Kubernetes: K3s
