Good fit if

  • You want full-text search on logs (OpenSearch is the pick)
  • You already use Grafana and want cheap storage (Grafana Loki is the pick)
  • You want logs, traces and metrics together (SigNoz is the pick)
  • You need an agent on every server (Fluent Bit is the pick)
  • You need to transform logs in flight (Vector is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You cannot host, patch and back up a server yourself and want a vendor to run it

Log management tools collect, store and search the text your systems write, and the open-source choices split by role. Some store and search logs: OpenSearch and Elasticsearch index everything for fast full-text queries, while Grafana Loki indexes only labels and keeps the log text compressed, which is much cheaper to run but slower for free-form searches. SigNoz stores logs alongside traces and metrics in one interface. Other tools only move data. Fluent Bit and Vector collect logs from servers and containers, transform them and forward them to a store, and you usually pair one with a store above. Cost is the main trade-off. Indexing every word is flexible but needs a lot of disk and memory, so a modest log volume can need a real cluster, and retention rules become essential. Licenses deserve attention: Elasticsearch is offered under a triple license that includes AGPL, OpenSearch is Apache-2.0, and several others have enterprise folders under commercial terms. Ask how much data you produce each day, how long you must keep it, and whether you search by exact fields or by free text. If your volume is small, a managed service may cost less than the engineer time to run any of these. Test with a week of real logs before you commit.

OpenSearch

Apache-2.0 search and analytics engine forked from Elasticsearch 7.10. Managed versions are sold by cloud vendors, not priced here.

Price: Free (OpenSearch pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted. Apache-2.0 (open source) (license source).

Project activity: 13.9k GitHub stars · latest release 3.9.0 (Sep 29, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Full-text log search with permissive licensing.

Worth knowing: Forked from Elasticsearch 7.10; managed versions are sold by cloud vendors, not priced here.

Elasticsearch

Triple-licensed under AGPL-3.0, SSPL or Elastic License 2.0, with a self-managed Basic license. Elastic Cloud Hosted Standard starts around $99 a month.

Price: Free (self-managed Basic license; Elastic Cloud offers a free trial); paid from $99 per month, Elastic Cloud Hosted Standard (estimate for 120 GB, 2 zones) (Elasticsearch pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted, Elastic Cloud. AGPL-3.0, SSPL or Elastic License 2.0 (triple license) (open source) (license source).

Project activity: 78.4k GitHub stars · latest release v9.5.5 (Oct 6, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Teams already in the Elastic ecosystem.

Worth knowing: Self-managed paid tiers are priced by nodes and RAM; no number is published.

Compare: Elasticsearch alternatives

Grafana Loki

AGPL-3.0, described as Prometheus for logs. It indexes labels rather than full text, so it is cheaper to run; Grafana Cloud has a separate free tier.

Price: Free (Free open-source software; Grafana Cloud has a separate free tier) (Grafana Loki pricing, checked 2026-10-24).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted. AGPL-3.0 (open source) (license source).

Project activity: 29.1k GitHub stars · latest release v3.7.9 (Oct 20, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Cost-conscious logs alongside Grafana.

Worth knowing: Repository description: like Prometheus, but for logs. Cloud free-tier numbers were not read for this record.

SigNoz

MIT with an ee folder under a separate license, combining logs, traces and metrics. Cloud Teams starts at $49 a month including $49 of usage.

Price: Free (self-hosted Community Edition; cloud shows no free allowance); paid from $49 per month incl. $49 of usage (Cloud Teams) (SigNoz pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
