Verdict:Ollama is easy to like: it is MIT-licensed, runs on macOS, Linux and Windows, and running models on your own hardware is unlimited. The paid part is its cloud, with a Pro plan at $20 per month. People look for alternatives for three reasons: they want a graphical app, a different runtime, or a front end with documents. If you want a polished desktop app, LM Studio is free at home and at work, but it is not open source and we only confirmed a Windows download on its page. Jan is the open-source version of the same idea under Apache-2.0. If you want more control than Ollama gives, llama.cpp is the MIT-licensed engine underneath this whole category, with the work that implies. Open WebUI and AnythingLLM are not replacements for the runtime at all. Open WebUI is a browser interface that connects to something like Ollama, and AnythingLLM adds document chat and can be self-hosted free or hosted from $50 per month. The trade-off is that the GUI apps hide model management, while Ollama gives you a simple command and an API other tools already speak. Stay on Ollama if scripts or other apps depend on its API. Move to LM Studio or Jan when you want to click, and to llama.cpp when you want to tune.

Good fit if

  • You want a graphical app instead of a command line (LM Studio is the pick)
  • You want the same idea as open source (Jan is the pick)
  • You want to tune the runtime yourself (llama.cpp is the pick)
  • You want to chat with your own documents (AnythingLLM is the pick)
  • You want a browser front end for models you already run (Open WebUI is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on Ollama features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

Ollama today: Free (running models on your own hardware is always unlimited; cloud Free plan has starter credits); paid from $20 per month (Pro, $60 of cloud usage credits) (Ollama pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for Ollama alternatives

Ollama runs models locally for free on every plan, but its cloud models are metered. Free includes only starter credits for starter models and one concurrent request; Pro is $20 per month ($200 a year) with $60 of monthly usage and 3 concurrent requests; Max is $100 with $300 of usage and 10. Credits reset monthly and do not roll over, and requests above the concurrency limit queue behind a fixed limit.

LM Studio

Compared with Ollama: Free to use at home and at work with no separate commercial license, per its July 2025 blog post. It is a desktop app rather than an open-source command-line runtime, and we only confirmed a Windows download on its homepage.

Price: Free (free to use both at home and at work, no separate commercial license; Teams and Enterprise plans for sharing and SSO are sold separately with no price shown) (LM Studio pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows. Proprietary (free to use at home and at work per the vendor blog).

Best for: A desktop app for local models.

Jan

Compared with Ollama: Apache-2.0 and free, a desktop app for running models locally. Closer to a chat application than Ollama's command-line service, so scripting and server use are less direct.

Price: Free (Jan pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Desktop. Apache-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 45.1k GitHub stars · latest release v0.8.7 (Oct 20, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: An open-source local chat app.

llama.cpp

Compared with Ollama: MIT-licensed inference engine for macOS, Linux and Windows, and free. Ollama is built on this kind of runtime, so you gain control and lose the simple model pulling and packaging.

Price: Free (free open-source inference engine; you supply the hardware) (llama.cpp pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: macOS, Linux, Windows. MIT (open source).

Project activity: 132.6k GitHub stars · latest release v0.7.0 (Oct 15, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Direct control of the runtime.

Worth knowing: License taken from the GitHub repository metadata.

Open WebUI

Compared with Ollama: Self-hosted web interface with a license that adds a branding clause, so it is not OSI open source. It sits on top of a runtime like Ollama rather than replacing it, giving you chat, not inference.

Price: Free (Self-hosted under the license; branding must stay unless under 50 users in a rolling 30 days or with permission) (Open WebUI pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Web, Self-hosted. Open WebUI License (BSD-3-style terms plus a branding clause).

Best for: A browser chat front end.

Worth knowing: The site lists enterprise options without prices. The license is not an OSI open-source license because of the branding clause, so openSource is false.

AnythingLLM

Compared with Ollama: MIT-licensed desktop app, free, with Docker self-hosting at no cost and a hosted Basic plan at $50 per month. It adds document chat on top of a model, where Ollama just serves the model.

Price: Free (Desktop app free; self-hosting with Docker free; no limits stated); paid from $50 per month, Basic hosted plan billed monthly (Pro is $99 per month; Enterprise custom) (AnythingLLM pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Desktop, Self-hosted via Docker. MIT (open source).

Project activity: 67.7k GitHub stars · latest release v1.19.0 (Oct 26, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Chatting with your own documents.
