Verdict:Hugging Face is a hub more than a single product: model files, datasets, hosted demo apps called Spaces, and paid compute. Its pricing page shows free CPU Basic Spaces and ZeroGPU, PRO at $9 a month, and Team at $20 per user, so most individuals can stay free. That also means there is no one-for-one substitute, and it is better to split the job. For running models, Ollama, Jan and LM Studio all work on your own machine; Ollama is MIT-licensed, Jan is Apache-2.0, and LM Studio says it is free at home and at work. They run models but do not host or share them. For free compute while you experiment, Kaggle offers a weekly GPU quota and Colab offers T4 GPUs subject to availability; Colab publishes no guaranteed units. Kaggle is also the nearest thing to a public dataset and notebook community. The trade-off: you lose the shared catalogue, version history and Space hosting that make Hugging Face useful for publishing. Leave only if your need is private local inference or short GPU sessions; keep the account if you publish models or demos, since the free tier already covers that.

Good fit if

  • You want to run models privately on your own machine (Ollama is the pick)
  • You want a simple desktop chat app for local models (Jan is the pick)
  • You need free GPU time for a notebook (Kaggle Notebooks is the pick)
  • You prototype in notebooks and share links (Google Colab is the pick)
  • You want a GUI for trying local models (LM Studio is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on Hugging Face features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

Hugging Face today: Free (Pricing page lists free compute: CPU Basic Spaces (2 vCPU, 16 GB) and ZeroGPU; it states no free storage limits); paid from $9 per month (PRO, single account; Team is $20 per user) (Hugging Face pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Why people look for Hugging Face alternatives

Hugging Face PRO is $9 a month and Team is $20 per user, but heavier work is billed by the hour. Spaces GPUs run from $0.40 for a T4 to $2.50 for an A100 large, and Inference Endpoints from $0.50 for a T4 to $4.50 for an H100. Storage is $12 per TB a month for public and $18 for private repositories at base rates. Free ZeroGPU access has no stated absolute quota; PRO multiplies it by 8.

Ollama

Compared with Hugging Face: MIT-licensed tool that runs models on your own hardware with no usage cap. You lose the Hub's huge shared library of models, datasets and Spaces, and gain private local inference.

Price: Free (running models on your own hardware is always unlimited; cloud Free plan has starter credits); paid from $20 per month (Pro, $60 of cloud usage credits) (Ollama pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: macOS, Linux, Windows. MIT (open source).

Project activity: 185k GitHub stars · latest release v0.40.12 (Oct 27, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Running models locally.

Worth knowing: Platform list is from the project's download offering; confirm on ollama.com/download.

Jan

Compared with Hugging Face: Free and open source desktop app (Apache-2.0) for chatting with local models. It does not host datasets or let you publish models like Hugging Face, so it replaces only the use side.

Price: Free (Jan pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Desktop. Apache-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 45.1k GitHub stars · latest release v0.8.7 (Oct 20, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: A local chat app.

LM Studio

Compared with Hugging Face: Free to use at home and at work per its blog, with a desktop app for running local models. It is not a model-sharing platform, so you lose Hub hosting and community pages.

Price: Free (free to use both at home and at work, no separate commercial license; Teams and Enterprise plans for sharing and SSO are sold separately with no price shown) (LM Studio pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows. Proprietary (free to use at home and at work per the vendor blog).

Best for: Trying local models on a desktop.

Kaggle Notebooks

Compared with Hugging Face: Free notebooks with a weekly GPU quota per its docs, plus public datasets. Closest to Hugging Face for sharing data and notebooks, but it is not a general model hub or Spaces host.

Price: Free (Free; weekly GPU quota of about 30 hours (sometimes higher), sessions up to 9 hours) (Kaggle Notebooks pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web. Proprietary hosted service.

Best for: Datasets and free GPU notebooks.

Google Colab

Compared with Hugging Face: Free tier with notebooks and T4 GPUs subject to quota, with no guaranteed compute units. It replaces Hugging Face's free compute for experiments, not its hosting of models and demo apps.

Price: Free (Free tier has no guaranteed compute units; usage limits are not published, notebooks run up to 12 hours depending on availability, T4 GPUs subject to quota); paid from $9.99 per month (Colab Pro, flexible plan, 100 compute units) (Google Colab pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web. Proprietary hosted service.

Best for: Free notebook GPUs for experiments.

Replicate

Compared with Hugging Face: Hosted model API billed by usage rather than a subscription: flux-schnell is $3.00 per thousand output images and an Nvidia T4 GPU is $0.81 per hour. Its pricing page lists no free tier, unlike Hugging Face.

Price: See pricing page (Replicate pricing, checked 2026-10-25).
