Good fit if

  • You build a React or Vue app and want light outlines (Lucide is the pick)
  • You use Tailwind CSS (Heroicons is the pick)
  • You need a huge set for a dashboard (Tabler Icons is the pick)
  • You want one icon in several weights (Phosphor Icons is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

Free icons come as libraries, not apps, and the license matters more than the look. The big open-source sets, Lucide, Tabler, Heroicons, Phosphor and Bootstrap Icons, are all released under permissive licenses (ISC or MIT), so you can use them in commercial products and ship them in your own code without attribution beyond keeping the license notice. Material Symbols from Google is under Apache 2.0, which also allows commercial use but carries its own notice requirements. Start from how you will use them. If you build a website or app, install through npm and import only the icons you use, which keeps bundle size down. If you work in design tools, check that the set has a Figma file or plugin. Consistency counts for more than count: one set with one stroke width looks professional, while mixing three sets looks accidental. Stroke style differs too, with Lucide and Tabler on thin outlines, Heroicons offering outline and solid, and Material Symbols letting you vary weight and fill. The trade-off is breadth against coherence: a bigger set covers more concepts, but you may still need to draw a missing icon yourself. Six libraries follow with their license and source.

Community-maintained outline icons under the ISC license, with some Feather-derived icons under MIT. Consistent stroke style and a clean npm install make it a safe default for web apps.
