Verdict:Zed is already free: the Personal plan is $0 when you bring your own API keys or external agents, and Pro is $10 a month. So nobody leaves Zed over price; the reasons are extensions, platform or licensing. If you left because a language or tool is missing, VS Code is the answer, free for private or commercial use on every desktop platform and the web, with the caveat that Microsoft's build is not open source. VSCodium fixes that caveat by shipping MIT-licensed binaries without telemetry, at the cost of Open VSX instead of the Marketplace. If you left because you want to stay open source and native, Lapce is the closest in spirit, but it is a smaller project and deserves a language check first. If you left the graphical editor entirely, Helix and Neovim are your terminal choices: Helix has language servers and tree-sitter built in and is the lower-effort start, while Neovim gives you a Lua extension surface and years of plugins. One practical point: Zed's Pro plan includes $5 of AI tokens, so if the reason for switching is AI behavior, compare how each alternative handles agents before assuming parity. Install two candidates against a real project for a day each, and switch the one whose language support held up, not the one with the nicest screenshots.

Zed today: Free (Personal plan at $0, used with your own API keys or external agents; Zeta edit predictions are listed under paid plans); paid from $10 per month (Pro, includes $5 of AI tokens) (Zed pricing, checked 2026-10-28).
Zed itself is free, but its hosted AI is metered. The free Personal plan works with your own API keys or external agents. Zed's edit prediction docs list its Zeta predictions under the Pro, Student and Business plans, and say Free users can use other providers such as GitHub Copilot or a local model. Pro is $10 a month and includes $5 of tokens, with usage beyond that billed at API list price plus 10%, charged at month end or every additional $10. Business is $30 per seat per month with no bundled token credits. Teams relying on hosted models should budget for that 10% markup.
Compared with Zed: VS Code is the default alternative when extensions matter more than speed. It is free for private or commercial use and runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and the web. Unlike Zed, the download is under a Microsoft license rather than open source.
Price: Free (for private or commercial use per Microsoft's FAQ) (Visual Studio Code pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux, Web. Microsoft product license (source in the MIT-licensed Code - OSS repository).
Best for: Developers who need the widest extension and language support.
Worth knowing: The downloadable product is under a Microsoft license; the MIT license covers the separate Code - OSS repository.
Compared with Zed: VSCodium builds VS Code's source into MIT-licensed binaries with telemetry disabled, giving you Zed's open-source stance with VS Code's interface. It uses Open VSX instead of Microsoft's Marketplace, so some restrictively licensed extensions will not work.
Price: Free (community builds of VS Code source with telemetry disabled) (VSCodium pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. MIT (open source).
Project activity: 33.8k GitHub stars · latest release 1.143.17183 (Oct 26, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Developers who want VS Code's layout without Microsoft's build.
Worth knowing: It uses the Open VSX registry instead of Microsoft's Marketplace, so some extensions with restrictive licenses may not work.
Compared with Zed: Helix is a terminal editor with language server support and tree-sitter highlighting built in, which is closer to Zed's out-of-the-box feel than Neovim. Its GitHub page mentions no plugin system, and it is modal, so expect a learning curve rather than a GUI.
Price: Free (open-source modal editor with built-in language server support and tree-sitter highlighting) (Helix pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Terminal. MPL-2.0 (open source).
Project activity: 46.7k GitHub stars · latest release 25.07.1 (Jul 18, 2025) · last commit Sep 29, 2026
Best for: Terminal users who want few settings to manage.
Compared with Zed: Neovim trades Zed's graphical window for a terminal editor you extend with Lua. It is Apache-2.0 with prebuilt packages for Windows, macOS and Linux. Zed's built-in collaboration has no direct equivalent, so you assemble your own from plugins.
Price: Free (open-source Vim fork with a Lua API) (Neovim pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux, Terminal. Apache-2.0 (code copied from Vim stays under the Vim license) (open source).
Project activity: 103.2k GitHub stars · latest release v0.12.6 (Oct 9, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Keyboard-first developers who like configuring their tools.
Compared with Zed: Lapce is the nearest in spirit to Zed: a native editor written in Rust, Apache-2.0, on Windows, Linux and macOS. It is a smaller project, so check that your languages are supported before you switch.
Price: Free (open-source editor written in Rust) (Lapce pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Apache-2.0 (open source).
Project activity: 39k GitHub stars · latest release v0.4.6 (Jan 21, 2026) · last commit Oct 9, 2026
Best for: Developers who want a lightweight native GUI editor.
Compared with Zed: Cursor has a free tier with a small allowance of agent and chat requests; Plus is $8 a month (Grok models only) and Premium is $30. Third-party model usage is billed separately, whereas Zed Pro is $10 with $5 of AI tokens.
Price: Free (Free tier with a small allowance of agent and chat requests); paid from $8 per month (Plus, Grok models only; Premium is $30) (Cursor pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Compared with Zed: A personal licence is $99 one time, including three years of updates and Sublime Merge, with business at $65 per seat per year. Zed's Personal plan is $0 with your own API keys, so Sublime costs more up front.
Price: Paid from $99 per one-time personal license ($99 default selection includes the Sublime Merge bundle and three years of updates); business is $65 per seat per year (Sublime Text pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
