Verdict:Trello's free plan allows up to 10 collaborators and 10 boards per Workspace, with 250 Workspace command runs a month and 10 MB per file; Standard is $5 per user a month on annual billing. Those limits are the main reasons people leave, along with wanting data on their own server. If you only want cards on columns, self-host Wekan (MIT) or Kanboard (MIT): both are free, neither limits boards, and Wekan is the closer imitation. PLANKA looks the most like Trello of the open options, but its licence is source-available rather than open source, so read it before using it commercially. Vikunja and Plane are better when you want tasks and issues as well as boards, and both are AGPL-3.0. On the hosted side, ClickUp's free plan has unlimited members, which beats Trello's collaborator cap, and Asana's free Personal plan covers only two users. The honest trade-off is simplicity and ecosystem. Trello is fast to learn, has mobile apps and a catalogue of Power-Ups, and every alternative here is either heavier or rougher around the edges. Self-hosting also means you handle backups and updates. We did not test importing Trello boards into any of them.

Why people look for Trello alternatives

Trello's free plan allows up to 10 collaborators and 10 boards per Workspace, 10 MB per file and 250 Workspace command runs a month. Standard is $5 per user per month billed annually ($6 monthly) and lifts the board limit, file size to 250 MB and runs to 1,000. Calendar, Timeline, Table, Dashboard and Map views, AI features and unlimited command runs need Premium at $10 per user annually ($12.50 monthly). Each added person is another seat.
