Verdict:Todoist's free Beginner plan is capped at 5 personal projects, 3 filter views and one week of activity history, so people tend to leave when they hit those limits or want reminders without paying. The question is what you actually used it for. If it was a personal inbox with due dates, Microsoft To Do and TickTick cover it for free and add My Day planning or a calendar and habit tracker. Super Productivity is the pick if you work at a desk, want time tracking and prefer data that never leaves your machine. Vikunja suits people who already run a home server or small VPS: it is AGPL-3.0, supports lists and Kanban, and the hosted Cloud option starts at EUR 4 a month if you would rather not maintain it. For a small team that thinks in stages rather than due dates, Trello's free boards or self-hosted Kanboard replace Todoist's shared projects without per-seat fees at the start. The trade-off is polish. Todoist's natural-language entry, filters and mobile capture are better than every free option here, and the open-source tools need more setup and have smaller communities. Stay if you rely on filters and quick capture on a phone. Leave if you are paying only to lift project caps that a free competitor does not have.

Good fit if

  • You want a free list app tied to Outlook and your Microsoft account (Microsoft To Do is the pick)
  • You want tasks and a calendar in one place (TickTick is the pick)
  • You want to own your data and run it on a server (Vikunja is the pick)
  • You want a desktop planner with a time tracker (Super Productivity is the pick)
  • Your team wants visual boards (Trello is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on Todoist features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

Todoist today: Free (Beginner: up to 5 personal projects, 3 filter views, 5 people per personal project, 5 MB file uploads, 1 week of activity history) (Todoist pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Why people look for Todoist alternatives

Todoist's free plan is deliberately small. It allows 5 personal projects with up to 5 people each, 3 filter views, 5 MB file uploads and one week of activity history, and custom task reminders are a Pro feature. Pro raises these to 300 projects, 150 filter views, 100 MB uploads and full reporting history. Business plans are priced per member and shown plus local tax. Heavy users hit the limits quickly, and teams wanting Gantt-style planning or task dependencies often move to a project-management tool instead.

Vikunja

Compared with Todoist: Open source (AGPL-3.0) task manager you can self-host for nothing, or use Vikunja Cloud from EUR 4 a month. You lose Todoist's polished mobile apps and natural-language polish, and gain lists, kanban and your own data.

Price: Free (Self-host free forever); paid from EUR 4 per month, Vikunja Cloud Personal (Organization EUR 5 per user/month) (Vikunja pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, Self-hosted. AGPL-3.0 (open source).

Project activity: 5.9k GitHub stars · latest release v2.7.1 (Oct 20, 2026) · last commit Oct 28, 2026

Best for: Self-hosted task manager.

Super Productivity

Compared with Todoist: Free MIT-licensed desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux with time tracking and a daily planner. Unlike Todoist's cloud-first design it is local-first, so team sharing is weak but there is no plan limit to hit.

Price: Free (Free and open source per the vendor page ('Free. Open source. Yours.'); no paid plan described) (Super Productivity pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. MIT (open source).

Project activity: 23.2k GitHub stars · latest release v19.3.1 (Oct 25, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Offline planner with time tracking.

Microsoft To Do

Compared with Todoist: Free list app with My Day planning and sharing, tied to a Microsoft account. It has fewer filters and no Todoist-style natural language rules, but costs nothing and sits inside Outlook.

Price: Free (Microsoft To Do pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Web, Windows, iOS, Android. Proprietary.

Best for: Microsoft account users.

TickTick

Compared with Todoist: Free tier with a built-in calendar, habit tracking and a Pomodoro timer in the same app, where Todoist sells these differently. Paid Premium exists; the official price page was not readable, so confirm the number.

Price: Free (9 lists, 99 tasks and notes per list, basic calendar views); paid from $49.99 per year (Premium: 299 lists, 999 tasks per list, unlimited calendar views) (TickTick pricing, checked 2026-10-25).

Platforms and license: Web, iOS, Android, Windows, macOS. Proprietary.

Best for: Tasks plus calendar in one app.

Trello

Compared with Todoist: Free board view with up to 10 boards per Workspace, and $5 per user a month billed annually if you outgrow it. It trades Todoist's fast list capture for visual cards, which suits team flow better than personal inbox work.

Price: Free (up to 10 collaborators and 10 boards per Workspace, 250 Workspace command runs a month, 10 MB per file); paid from $5 per user/month, billed annually ($6 billed monthly) (Trello pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, iOS, Android. Proprietary.

Best for: Visual team boards.

Kanboard

Compared with Todoist: MIT-licensed Kanban you run yourself, free. It has none of Todoist's reminders or mobile polish, but gives a simple board with no per-user pricing and full control of the data.

Price: Free (Free self-hosted Kanban) (Kanboard pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, Self-hosted. MIT (open source).

Project activity: 9.9k GitHub stars · latest release v1.2.56 (Oct 21, 2026) · last commit Oct 24, 2026

Best for: Simple self-hosted Kanban.

Asana

Compared with Todoist: Starts at $10.99 per user per month billed annually ($13.49 monthly). Built for team projects with timelines and reporting, so it is heavier than Todoist for personal lists.

Price: Free (Personal plan for up to 2 users with unlimited tasks and projects and list, board and calendar views); paid from $10.99 per user/month, billed annually ($13.49 billed monthly) (Asana pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

ClickUp

Compared with Todoist: Free Forever plan with unlimited members, 5 Spaces and 100 automation actions a month. It covers boards, docs and dependencies that Todoist lacks, but is far more complex for simple personal task lists.

Price: Free (Free Forever plan with unlimited members, 60 MB of storage, 5 Spaces and 100 automation actions a month) (ClickUp pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
