Verdict:SurveyMonkey's free Basic plan lets you collect responses but shows only a limited number per survey, which is the usual trigger for leaving. The cheapest paid route we saw is Team Advantage at $30 per user a month, billed annually with a minimum of three users, so a small group starts at about $90 a month. If you only need to ask people questions and read the answers, Tally is the easiest escape: unlimited forms and submissions on the free plan, within fair use. For research, LimeSurvey's Community Edition is free to run yourself and has the logic and quota features SurveyMonkey keeps behind higher tiers; it costs you an afternoon of setup and some design polish. Formbricks fits product teams who want surveys inside an app, with an AGPL-3.0 core and a 250-response free plan. Jotform and Typeform are hosted, polished and priced in the same region as SurveyMonkey once you pass the free tier. The trade-off is analysis: SurveyMonkey's reporting and benchmark-style features are what you pay for, and most free options give you raw responses and an export. Pull a CSV and see if your spreadsheet can do the rest. We did not test any import from SurveyMonkey.

Why people look for SurveyMonkey alternatives

SurveyMonkey's free Basic plan lets you view only a limited number of responses per survey, even when more are collected. Team plans need at least 3 users: Team Advantage is $30 per user a month billed annually with 50,000 responses a year, and extra responses cost $0.15 each. White-label branding, advanced logic and crosstabs wait for Team Premier at $92. If auto-renew is switched off, old responses over the Basic limit can be deleted after 365 days.

Tally

Compared with SurveyMonkey: Free plan allows unlimited forms and submissions within fair-use guidelines, while SurveyMonkey's Basic hides responses beyond a limit. You lose its survey-specific analysis depth but keep every response.

Platforms and license: Web. Proprietary.

Best for: Simple surveys with no response cap.

LimeSurvey

Compared with SurveyMonkey: Community Edition is free to self-host (GPL-2.0 or later), so no response paywall like SurveyMonkey's Basic. Heavier to set up and the interface is dated, but it handles complex survey logic.

Price: Free (Free package on LimeSurvey Cloud (see the pricing page for limits); Community Edition is self-hosted); paid from $36 per month, billed annually (Expert; Basic is $39 billed monthly) (LimeSurvey pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Formbricks

Compared with SurveyMonkey: Open-source (AGPL-3.0) with a free Hobby plan of 250 responses a month, aimed at in-product surveys. Pro is $74 a month, well above SurveyMonkey's $30 per user, so it suits product teams.

Price: Free (Hobby plan: 1 workspace and 250 responses a month); paid from $74 per month (Pro, 3 workspaces and 2,000 responses; annual billing gives 2 months free) (Formbricks pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, iOS, Android. Proprietary.

Best for: Mixed forms and surveys.

Typeform

Compared with SurveyMonkey: Free plan with a limited response count; paid is $28 a month billed yearly. Conversational one-question-at-a-time layout, but pricier per user than SurveyMonkey's team plan.

Price: Free (Free plan with a limited number of responses a month; the page gives no count); paid from $28 per month, billed yearly (Basic, 100 responses a month, 1 user; $39 billed monthly) (Typeform pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, iOS, Android. Proprietary.

Best for: Polished customer-facing surveys.

Qualtrics

Compared with SurveyMonkey: Enterprise research platform whose pricing page publishes no dollar amounts, only a request-pricing form. You gain far deeper research and experience-management tooling than SurveyMonkey, but you lose self-serve pricing and quick setup for a simple poll.

Price: See pricing page (Qualtrics pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

QuestionPro

Compared with SurveyMonkey: Essentials is free for 1 user with 200 responses per survey and 30 question types. Paid Team Edition is $83 per user a month billed annually, against $30 for SurveyMonkey Team Advantage, so the extra money buys more research depth.
