Verdict:QuickBooks Online has a Free plan on its pricing page, but the paid tiers start at $38 a month at list price, climbing to $340 for Advanced, and that is what most people feel. If your books are a handful of invoices and bills, Wave Starter or Zoho Books' free plan cover the same ground for nothing, with limits you can read in advance: Zoho stops being free once yearly revenue passes $50K, and Wave asks you to pay for bank import. If you have someone who can run a server, ERPNext gives you a full ledger under GPL-3.0 with no per-user fee, but you inherit upgrades, backups and a longer setup than QuickBooks ever required. GnuCash and Manager suit one person on one machine and not much else. The trade-off most people underestimate is the ecosystem. QuickBooks is what many accountants, payroll tools and bill-pay products connect to first, and none of the free tools match that. Before you leave, export your chart of accounts and a year of transactions, and ask your accountant what format they accept. Switching mid-year is possible, but a clean cut at a fiscal year-end is far easier to reconcile than a split in the middle.
