Verdict:Leave Odoo when you only need accounting and invoicing, or when the ERP install is heavier than the job. ERPNext is the open-source ERP for that case. It is GPL-3.0, free to self-host, and covers accounting, inventory and sales together, but you own hosting, upgrades and backups. Invoice Ninja is narrower. Its hosted plan for up to five clients is described as free forever, and it covers invoices, quotes, projects and time tracking, but not a general ledger. Its Elastic License makes it source-available rather than open source. Manager is a desktop accounting app with no time or usage limits, but it is single-user, and multi-user and remote access need the cloud edition, which is not free. Zoho Books suits a small firm. It is free while annual revenue stays under $50,000, with one user, one accountant and up to 1,000 invoices a year, and Standard is $15 a month billed annually. Xero has no free plan. Its Early plan is $27 a month with no per-user license fees, and it is a cloud accounting product rather than an ERP. The trade-off is breadth against upkeep. Odoo's Community edition is LGPL-3.0 and self-hostable, but a company that needs manufacturing or purchasing still gets more from Odoo or ERPNext than from these. Pick Zoho Books for a free small-business ledger, ERPNext for self-hosted ERP, and Xero for cloud accounting with an accountant.

Not ideal if

  • You rely on Odoo features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

Odoo today: Free (One App Free plan on Odoo Online, unlimited users) (Odoo pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for Odoo alternatives

Odoo's free plan covers one app for unlimited users, but installing a second app moves you to the per-user Standard plan, and enabling Studio or adding a second company moves you to the Custom plan. Backend users, and employees without a linked user, count as paid seats. Odoo.sh hosting, implementation services, in-app purchase credits such as SMS and AI bill scanning, and maintenance of custom code are not included in any plan, so the bill grows beyond the per-user price.

ERPNext

Compared with Odoo: GPL-3.0 open-source ERP, free to self-host, with accounting, inventory and sales in one system. You avoid per-app pricing, but you own hosting, upgrades and backups. Frappe Cloud is the managed option.

Price: Free (Free to self-host; Frappe Cloud is the managed option) (ERPNext pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, Self-hosted. GPL-3.0 (open source).

Project activity: 40.7k GitHub stars · latest release v15.124.1 (Oct 22, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Free self-hosted ERP.

Worth knowing: Its Accounting module covers recording transactions through financial reporting. Running it yourself means handling hosting, upgrades and backups.

Manager

Compared with Odoo: Free desktop edition with no time or usage limits, but it is single-user. Multi-user and remote access need the cloud edition, which is not free, and its price was not found. Much lighter than Odoo, and not a full ERP.

Best for: Small firms under the revenue limit.

Platforms and license: Web, iOS, Android. Proprietary.

Price: See pricing page (NetSuite pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

Compared with Odoo: Essentials is $80 per user per month billed yearly and Premium $110, with a 30-day trial, above every per-user price on Odoo's page. Roundups name Microsoft Dynamics as an Odoo alternative.
