Open source runs deep in 3D printing: the slicers most people use are descended from one another. Slic3r came first, PrusaSlicer forked from it, and Bambu Studio, SuperSlicer and OrcaSlicer all trace back to PrusaSlicer, with Cura on a separate line. All are free to use and share the AGPL-3.0, except Cura, which is LGPL-3.0. The practical consequence is that settings feel familiar across them, so switching slicers is less painful than it sounds. Pick by printer support and by how much tuning you want. Cura is the broadest default; PrusaSlicer has clean beginner, advanced and expert modes; OrcaSlicer adds calibration tools for people who like to tune; SuperSlicer exposes even more settings; Bambu Studio is built around Bambu Lab hardware. For the model itself, FreeCAD and OpenSCAD give you dimension-driven parts and Blender covers organic work. The trade-off with open source here is polish: some slicers update quickly and break profiles, so keep a known-good version when a long print matters. Forks also drift. Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer share a base, but profiles are not always interchangeable between them. Check which one your printer vendor actually supports before you commit to it, since the vendor's tested profiles save more time than any feature.
LGPL-3.0 slicer from UltiMaker, the broad default with a free download. We confirmed the license from the repository because the vendor site blocked our fetch.
