Verdict:Free SketchUp alternatives we exported with: FreeCAD (parametric STEP/STL), OpenSCAD (scripted STL), Blender (mesh STL). LibreCAD covers 2D DXF (incomplete headless PDF). None open .skp natively.

Short answer: for a free SketchUp alternative you can run offline, start with FreeCAD (we exported STEP + STL), OpenSCAD (scripted STL + PNG), or Blender (mesh STL). LibreCAD covers 2D DXF; we installed it but could not finish headless PDF export. None open .skp. Category hub: CAD software free. Full list: SketchUp alternatives.
How we ordered the tools: tools we exported with hands-on (FreeCAD, OpenSCAD, Blender) come first; LibreCAD is last because our headless test did not finish. None of these products is ours.
SketchUp’s moat is push-pull conceptual modeling and a friendly UI. Free tools trade that for parametric history, scripts or mesh control. Trimble’s own Free plan is web-based per plans and pricing; Go/Pro/Studio are paid subscriptions (Go $10.75/mo billed annually, Pro $33.25, Studio $71.58 shown on that page when fetched—confirm at checkout).
What it replaces: SketchUp when dimensions, feature history and STEP/STL matter.
What we saw: FreeCAD 1.0.0 freecadcmd built a 100×50×30 mm Part::Box; STEP 6,863 bytes (~170 entities) and STL 684 bytes in ~0.35 s command wall time.
What it lacks: SketchUp’s push-pull speed; steeper CAD UI; we did not test IFC/BIM pipelines.
Get it: freecad.org/downloads.php (the site listed a newer stable than our Debian 1.0.0 when we checked).
What it replaces: SketchUp for brackets and printable parts defined as code.
What we saw: OpenSCAD 2021.01 compiled cube([100,50,30]) to STL 1,521 bytes (~0.02 s) and an 800×600 PNG preview 9,106 bytes (~0.12 s).
What it lacks: freehand modeling, SketchUp-style materials/scenes.
Get it: openscad.org (GPL).
What it replaces: SketchUp for visualization and mesh STL when CAD history is secondary.
What we saw: Blender 4.3.2 exported a matching box mesh STL 684 bytes. Compare roles: SketchUp vs Blender.
What it lacks: parametric feature tree; different mental model from push-pull.
Installed LibreCAD 2.2.0.2; dxf2pdf on a four-line DXF hung under xvfb past 45 s—no PDF artifact, so it is not marked as tested. Still the free 2D DXF option on paper for floor-plan style work.
.skp fidelity.SketchUp’s speed is interactive inference of faces and edges. FreeCAD’s speed is changing a dimension later without redrawing. OpenSCAD’s speed is regenerating a family of parts from a script. If your models are one-off concepts for a client meeting, SketchUp Free/Go may still be cheaper in time. If your models become manufacturing or printable parts, FreeCAD/OpenSCAD repay the learning.
Our STL exports prove mesh output, not editable design intent. Keep STEP (FreeCAD) or .scad sources as masters. Blender STL is fine for viz/print mesh; pair with FreeCAD when holes and tolerances matter.
FreeCAD has architecture-oriented workbenches per its site; we only exported a box. Do not read our test as BIM validation. LibreCAD remains the free 2D plan tool on paper despite our hung PDF export.
Fusion 360 and other freemium CAD with account/commercial limits we did not verify. SketchUp extensions ecosystem claims. Any tool promising lossless .skp open without evidence on its official docs.
For printable parts, use OpenSCAD if you like describing a part in code, or FreeCAD if you want a parametric history you can revise; both wrote STL in our tests, and FreeCAD also wrote STEP. Blender is the option when you start from a mesh. None of them opens .skp files, so plan to rebuild. Blender also doubles as a free motion-graphics tool; see our After Effects alternatives if you animate as well. For related decisions, see SketchUp vs AutoCAD.
Debian 13 CPU-only. FreeCAD/OpenSCAD/Blender logs and outputs in our test logs. LibreCAD hang recorded. SketchUp not installed. Prices from Trimble plans page 2026-10-14.
No SketchUp install. LibreCAD dxf2pdf hung—no PDF evidence. No GPU, no BIM/IFC round-trips.
FreeCAD 1.0.0, OpenSCAD 2021.01 and Blender 4.3.2 were run on CPU-only Debian 13: FreeCAD exported a 100×50×30 mm box to STEP and STL via freecadcmd; OpenSCAD compiled matching dimensions from a .scad script to STL and PNG; Blender exported a matching mesh STL. LibreCAD 2.2.0.2 was installed; dxf2pdf under xvfb did not finish within 45 seconds—so it is not marked as tested. SketchUp itself not installed; Trimble Free/Go/Pro/Studio prices from sketchup.com/plans-and-pricing on 2026-10-14. Free-only tools table.
