Verdict:monday's free plan works as a trial more than a product: 2 seats, 3 boards and 3 docs, with paid plans from $9 per seat per month billed annually and a 3-seat minimum. So the useful question is which limit you hit first. If it is people, ClickUp (unlimited free members) and Trello (10 collaborators per Workspace) let a full team in without paying, ClickUp with more views and Trello with fewer settings to manage. If it is boards, Trello's 10 boards and Asana's unlimited projects fix that, although Asana keeps the same 2-user cap. If monday has turned into a database with a friendly front end, NocoDB is the closer match, and its Community edition lifts the record and seat limits if you will run a server. If you want ownership of the data and have someone who can host it, Plane takes 12 users free and ships AGPL-3.0 source. Notion is the odd one out: pick it only when documents matter as much as task boards, because its free plan limits blocks once a workspace has more than one member. For most small teams leaving monday over price, start with Trello or ClickUp and move to a paid plan only after a month of real use. Confirm every price on the vendor page first, since these change often.

monday.com today: Free (up to 2 seats, 3 boards and 3 docs); paid from $9 per seat/month, billed annually, 3-seat minimum for paid plans (monday.com pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
monday.com's free plan is limited to 2 seats, 3 boards and 3 docs, and paid plans start at 3 seats, so a one- or two-person team cannot buy a single seat. Basic is $9 per seat per month billed annually, but timeline and Gantt views and guest access start at Standard ($12) and time tracking at Pro ($19). Automation and integration actions are capped, at 250 a month each on Standard and 25,000 on Pro. Annual billing saves 18%, and monthly billing is not discounted.
Compared with monday.com: Asana's free Personal plan also stops at 2 users, the same cap as monday's free seats, but it offers unlimited tasks and projects instead of 3 boards. Paid starts at $10.99 per user billed annually against monday's $9, and the page states no seat minimum.
