Verdict:Asana's Personal plan covers 2 users with unlimited tasks and projects, so the first wall is people, not features. Starter is $10.99 per user per month billed annually ($13.49 monthly), which adds up quickly across a department. Trello lets 10 collaborators share up to 10 boards on its free plan and is the easiest move if your Asana projects were lists you ticked off. ClickUp keeps unlimited free members but squeezes storage to 60 MB, so it suits work without many attachments. Linear is for engineering teams only, and its 250-issue cap means you will pay sooner than with Trello. If you want to avoid per-seat pricing entirely, self-host: WeKan is just a board, Plane gives 12 free users with a modern interface, and OpenProject brings Gantt planning with a free Community edition, though its paid tier starts at 25 users. Asana-specific things like portfolios, rules and its integrations will not follow you, and we did not test any import, so export your projects to CSV first and rebuild one live project in the new tool before moving the rest. Treat vendor prices as snapshots from the checked date. If two of you are the whole company, the free tiers of Trello and ClickUp are both enough, and the choice is which interface you enjoy opening every morning.

  • Unlimited free members with many views (ClickUp is the pick)
  • Issue tracking for a small software team (Linear is the pick)
  • Self-hosting with a modern interface (Plane is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on Asana features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

Asana today: Free (Personal plan for up to 2 users with unlimited tasks and projects and list, board and calendar views); paid from $10.99 per user/month, billed annually ($13.49 billed monthly) (Asana pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for Asana alternatives

Asana's free Personal plan stops at 2 users, so any real team pays. Timeline and Gantt views, reporting dashboards, unlimited automations and custom fields start on Starter at $10.99 per user per month billed annually ($13.49 monthly). Portfolios, goals, approvals, resource management and time tracking need Advanced at $24.99 annually ($30.49 monthly). AI is metered as well: each plan includes 5 requests per user per month, capped per account, and extra requests cost $0.50 prepaid or $0.60 pay as you go.

Trello

Compared with Asana: Trello's free plan lets up to 10 collaborators per Workspace use up to 10 boards, while Asana's Personal plan stops at 2 users. Standard is $5 per user billed annually, about half of Asana Starter's $10.99.

Linear

Compared with Asana: Linear fits engineering work better than Asana's general task model: unlimited members and 250 issues on the free plan, then $10 per user billed yearly. The 250-issue cap bites quickly on a busy team, so it is for small software groups.

Plane

Compared with Asana: Plane is the self-hosted option with the widest free tier here: up to 12 users against Asana's 2, AGPL-3.0 code, and Pro at $6 per user billed annually. It organizes work as issues in cycles and modules, so non-engineering teams may find it technical.
