Removing a video background means separating a moving subject from what is behind it, frame by frame. Tools differ in how they do that and in how much they cost you in time. Browser editors such as Kapwing, VEED and CapCut do it in a few clicks and keep everything on the web or your phone, but free plans watermark or limit exports. Runway offers a green screen tool inside its credit system, with 125 one-time free credits. For local, no-limit work, two open-source programs do the matting on your own machine. BackgroundRemover is a command-line tool that outputs transparent MOV, GIF or WebM files, or a matte for use in an editor. Robust Video Matting is research code for people matting, which needs no green screen or reference background. Both need Python, and a GPU helps a lot. The usual trade-off is convenience against control. A browser tool will give a rough result in a minute; the open tools give you a clean alpha channel you can composite in Shotcut or Kdenlive, but only if you can run a command line. Footage with a clear subject, steady light and a contrasting background removes best in every tool.
