Good fit if

  • You want to protect a stolen laptop (cryptsetup (LUKS) is the pick)
  • You keep files in cloud storage (Cryptomator is the pick)
  • You want an encrypted container on Windows and Mac (VeraCrypt is the pick)
  • You must send a file to one person (GnuPG is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You cannot host, patch and back up a server yourself and want a vendor to run it

Encryption tools differ mainly in what they protect: a whole disk, a container of files, individual files, or messages. Whole-disk encryption on Linux uses cryptsetup with LUKS, which guards a drive if the machine is lost or stolen. VeraCrypt creates encrypted containers or encrypts partitions and works across Windows, macOS and Linux. gocryptfs and Cryptomator encrypt a folder file by file, which makes them a good match for cloud sync, since only changed files need uploading. Picocrypt is a small tool for encrypting single files with a simple interface, and age is a minimal command-line tool for the same job aimed at scripts. GnuPG is the long-standing standard for encrypting files and email to other people using public keys. The trade-off to understand is that strong encryption has no recovery path: lose the password or key and the data is gone, so keep a secure backup of keys and test decryption before you rely on it. Pick by threat. For a stolen laptop, use full-disk encryption. For files in Dropbox or Google Drive, use a per-file tool so the provider only sees ciphertext. To send something to a specific person, use public-key tools like GnuPG or age. Prefer well-reviewed, open-source tools, since a closed encryption tool asks you to trust its claims without checking.
