Verdict:VeraCrypt is free and open source for Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD, and it can encrypt file containers, partitions, USB drives and the Windows system partition, with hidden volumes. Few tools match that range. Leave it when you need something narrower or more integrated. Cryptomator is the best fit for encrypting a folder that syncs to Dropbox, Google Drive or similar, free on desktop with paid mobile write access. Picocrypt handles single files, but its repository is archived, so treat it as stable rather than developed. On Linux, cryptsetup with LUKS is the normal full-disk answer and gocryptfs is a lighter way to encrypt a folder. BitLocker needs no installation on Windows Pro, Enterprise or Education and unlocks with the TPM, but it is closed source and has no hidden volumes. The trade-off is flexibility against convenience. VeraCrypt works everywhere but needs manual mounting and unlocks with a password. Platform-native tools are smoother yet tie you to one operating system. If you share encrypted drives between Windows and Linux, stay with VeraCrypt. If you only use Windows Pro, BitLocker is simpler. If you only use cloud folders, Cryptomator is easier.

VeraCrypt today: Free (Free open source) (VeraCrypt pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
VeraCrypt's FAQ says it cannot decrypt anything without the right password or key, and an administrator can reset a password only if a volume header backup was made first. Opening volumes is deliberately slower because of the stronger key derivation, and file containers can read and write much slower when heavily fragmented. On Windows system drives the pre-boot password is typed on a US keyboard layout, and downgrading is blocked once a system drive is encrypted. On macOS, mounting a container can fail with an Operation not permitted error until Full Disk Access is granted.
Compared with VeraCrypt: Cryptomator encrypts files before they reach your cloud storage and is free on desktop for Windows, macOS and Linux. Mobile apps are read-only free, full access costs EUR 29.99 once. You lose VeraCrypt's whole-disk and hidden volumes.

Best for: Encrypting cloud folders.
Compared with VeraCrypt: Picocrypt encrypts single files with XChaCha20 and Argon2id and is GPL-3.0. The repository is archived, and it has no mounted volumes or system-disk encryption, so it replaces only VeraCrypt's file-level use.

Worth knowing: File encryption (XChaCha20, Argon2id). The repository is archived and read-only; the maintainer says it still works. macOS build is Apple silicon only.
Compared with VeraCrypt: gocryptfs is an MIT-licensed encrypted overlay filesystem for Linux, with beta-quality macOS support. It mounts a folder rather than a container, and Windows is not supported directly.

Compared with VeraCrypt: cryptsetup provides LUKS disk encryption, GPL-2.0-or-later. It is the standard Linux route for full-disk encryption, but you lose VeraCrypt's Windows support and hidden volumes.
Price: Free (Free open source) (cryptsetup (LUKS) pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
Platforms and license: Linux. GPL-2.0-or-later (open source).
Best for: Linux full-disk encryption.
Compared with VeraCrypt: BitLocker is built into Windows Pro, Enterprise and Education, with an automatic device encryption variant on other editions. It needs no install but is Windows-only and closed source, unlike VeraCrypt.
Price: See pricing page (BitLocker pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
Platforms and license: Windows. Proprietary (Windows feature).
Best for: Windows disks with TPM unlock.
