Good fit if

  • You want files overwritten on a schedule (Eraser is the pick)
  • You need to wipe free space from a script (SDelete is the pick)
  • You are selling an old Windows PC (PrivaZer is the pick)
  • You want to wipe an entire secondary disk (AOMEI Partition Assistant is the pick)
  • You clean browsers and apps on Linux (BleachBit is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

A file shredder overwrites a file's data before deleting it, so recovery tools find nothing. That matters less than it used to, which is the first thing to know. On a modern SSD, wear levelling can leave old copies where overwrite tools cannot reach, so full-disk encryption from the start is the stronger protection, and shredding is most meaningful on spinning hard drives and USB sticks. For those, Eraser is a GPLv3 Windows tool with a scheduler and several overwrite methods, and SDelete from Microsoft's Sysinternals is a command-line utility that overwrites files and free space to the DoD 5220.22-M standard. BleachBit and PrivaZer clean traces of past use, and AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard lists file shredding and disk wiping among its free functions. CCleaner is mostly a junk cleaner, and the pages checked did not confirm its shredding options. The trade-off is time and false confidence: multiple passes on a large drive take hours and add little over one pass on modern disks. If a drive has held truly sensitive data, physical destruction or encrypted-from-day-one storage beats any software shredder.
