Verdict:Docusign has no free plan: Personal is $11 a month on a $132 annual commitment for 5 envelopes a month, and Standard is $30 per user a month. If you send a handful of documents a month, you are paying for compliance features you may never use. The open-source choices are the cheapest: Documenso and DocuSeal both let you self-host, and both give you a signing interface with audit trails, but you become responsible for email delivery, backups and keeping the server patched. DocuSeal is the better fit if you need templates and an API; Documenso has the cleaner look. OpenSign advertises a free plan with unlimited signatures, though you should check its pricing page for paid plans. For a freelancer, SignWell's free 3 documents a month or Dropbox Sign's free plan is the least effort. The trade-off is legal and enterprise confidence. Docusign is the name many counterparties and procurement teams recognise, and some regulated industries ask for specific identity-verification or compliance options that these tools may not offer. Check with the person receiving the document before switching for contracts where that matters, such as real estate or lending. Switching does not affect documents you already signed, so download those completed PDFs and certificates before cancelling.
