Verdict:Leave Authy if you want a desktop app again or do not like a phone-number-based account. Twilio ended the Authy desktop apps on 19 March 2024 and pushed users to the mobile app, so Windows, macOS and Linux users lost that access. The mobile app itself is free per authy.com. Ente Auth is the closest like-for-like swap: open source, end-to-end encrypted sync and clients for phone, desktop and web. Proton Authenticator also covers every platform without an account lock-in, and you can import your codes from other apps. Aegis is the pick for Android users who want everything stored on the device. KeePassXC works if you already keep passwords locally and want codes beside them, though sync is your job. Bitwarden Authenticator is a basic free app, but its backup depends on the phone. The trade-off is where your secrets live. Putting passwords and codes in one vault is convenient, but it removes the separation a standalone app gives. Export your codes before you delete Authy, because you may not be able to read them out later, and test each new app by logging in before removing the old.

Why people look for Authy alternatives

Authy's download page now lists only Android and iOS apps under Mobile, with no desktop download shown, so anyone who relied on a desktop client needs another way to reach their codes. The main site describes the app as free with cloud backup and multi-device support, which means your codes are held in a vendor-hosted backup protected by your account rather than kept only on your own devices.
