File sharing covers two jobs people often lump together. The first is sending something once to someone else: a large video, a signed form, a folder of photos. Tools like OnionShare, PairDrop and croc are made for this and leave nothing behind once the transfer ends. The second is keeping files available for a group over time, for which you want accounts, permissions and links, and that is the territory of Nextcloud, ownCloud and Seafile. Syncthing sits between the two by keeping folders identical across your own devices without any hosted storage. For one-off sends, the key question is whether the other person can install something. PairDrop and croc's browser option work from a web page, croc and OnionShare give you the strongest privacy story because files go directly between machines or through Tor, and all three are free. For a group, the question is who administers it. Self-hosting means someone owns patching, backups and uptime, and a file server open to the internet is a target, so keep it updated and use HTTPS. Licences below come from the projects' repositories as of the check date; hosted or enterprise editions are separate products and were not priced here.
